Cervical Cancer
A malignant tumour of the cervix, the lowermost part of the uterus.
A malignant tumour of the lower-most part of the uterus (womb) that can be prevented by PAP smear screening and a HPV vaccine.
Symptoms include bleeding in between periods and after sexual in*******se. Foul smelling white discharge and low back pain or lower abdominal pain may also occur. In some cases there may be no symptoms.
Treatments include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.
For the earliest stages of cervical cancer, either surgery or radiation combined with chemo may be used. For later stages, radiation combined with chemo is usually the main treatment. Chemo (by itself) is often used to treat advanced cervical cancer.
The 5-year survival rate for all people with cervical cancer is 66%. However, survival rates can vary by factors such as race, ethnicity, and age. For white women, the 5-year survival rate is 71%.
Most early-stage cervical cancers are treated with a radical hysterectomy operation, which involves removing the cervix, uterus, part of the va**na and nearby lymph nodes. A hysterectomy can cure early-stage cervical cancer and prevent recurrence.
