Very often when we sit with our patterns, our ways of being that hurt us in some way - we uncover layers of shame that make it difficult to see ourselves fully and begin change.

The shame makes us believe we're the only ones getting it wrong, the only ones making these decisions and the only ones suffering. In therapy and in the company of loving friends, this shame gets gently challenged with other stories of pain & healing and reassurance that we're never truly alone.

Imagine a child who grew up being reprimanded for crying, they could find it difficult to express vulnerability as an adult.
A child who was always asked to not be angry, could find it difficult to consider their anger as valid as an adult.

In the Indian cultural context, we're often uncomfortable around grief, anger and sadness. As children grow up in families that don't acknowledge and even discourage emotional expression, we then have many generations of adults who find it difficult to get in touch with their emotional landscape.

There is power in recognising the history of our patterns as we can move forward with empathy and clarity.

When we get stuck in guilt, it gives rise to a cycle of shame, criticism, helplessness and poor self esteem. It can feel all powerful as if it's only our mistakes that define us. In facing guilt with compassion, taking accountability and moving towards genuine repair and change - we can utilise our guilt for the betterment of our relationships and ourselves.

Community care could look like a silent walk with a friend, a hug, sharing poems and stories, a sleepover, cooking together, having someone cook for you, venting and even memes and humour.

As we're displaced from each other physically, maintaining emotional connection is harder work. Receiving and sharing care can take many different forms, a reminder for us and you that healing is relational and we need each other perhaps more than ever - now. Look out for those around you - your friends, family and communities & those being oppressed and silenced around the world.
