WORLD OSTEOPOROSIS DAY 2024- “ SAY NO TO FRAGILE FRACTURES”
A fracture occurring with a trivial fall is a fragility fracture and is very common in elderly individuals . There are a lot of causes for osteoporosis including aging and menopause, endocrine conditions (like hyperparathyroidism , diabetes , hyperthyroidism etc), certain chronic disease like kidney disease, liver disease , rheumatological conditions and poor nutrition. Osteoporosis can easily be diagnosed and treated and new/ recurrent fractures can be prevented to a large extend.

Losing muscle with age is normal . This loss of muscle is much more in people with diabetes which in turn leads to increased blood sugars . Strength training ( in addition to aerobic exercise), good protein diet, vitamin D and omega 3 fatty acids have role in preventing this decline in muscle mass, muscle strength and improving quality of life .
