Retinal Detachment: Understanding the Warning Signs and Urgent Care Needed
Retinal detachment is a serious eye condition where the retina separates from the underlying tissue, leading to sudden vision changes and, if untreated, permanent vision loss. In his conversation with Pune Times Mirror, Dr. Vitthal Satav from Akash Eye Clinic and Laser Centre highlighted the importance of early recognition and prompt treatment to protect long-term vision.
Dr. Satav explained that retinal detachment often begins with subtle symptoms such as sudden flashes of light, new floaters, or the appearance of a “curtain” or shadow across the visual field. He emphasised that these signs should never be ignored, as immediate medical attention can significantly improve treatment outcomes.
The discussion also touched on modern diagnostic tools and surgical advancements that help restore retinal function. Dr. Satav stressed that maintaining regular eye check-ups, protecting the eyes from injuries, and managing underlying conditions like high myopia or diabetes are essential steps in reducing the risk of retinal detachment.
