It is crucial to understand more about these homeostatic controllers of the Gastrointestinal System as disruption in these controlling mechanisms leads to pathophysiological changes leading to disease.

The homeostatic controllers of the GI tract like the Interstitial cells of cajal (ICC's) are crucial for maintenence of the function of digestion and motility. Any disruption of these homeostatic controllers result in a loss of the state of balance or homeostasis thus increased susceptibility to disease

It was in 1849 that Dr .Claude Bernard proposed the concept of state of constancy of _mileu interior_ (internal environment) the ability of the human body to maintain eqyilibrium and introduced the concept of feedback control loop.

Dr. Walter Canon in 1926 coined the term "homeostasis" which is involves various regulatory mecahnism that are responsible for maintaining the normal function and equilibrium within the different organs, organelles, tissues, cells and genes. The regulatory components include various homeostatic controllers which are mediated by the feedback loop mechanisms.

In the GI tract one of the most crucial homeostatic controllers are the Interstitial cells of Cajal.

Herbal products and Phytochemicals isolated from them may cause pharmacokinetic interaction with modern drugs that are used clinically when they are used simultaneously. Cytochrome P450 isoenzymes are a super family of hemoprotein enzymes that are found in the membrane of endoplasmic reticulum mainly in the liver and are involved in the metabolism of plethora of xenobiotics, which have been reported to be involved in several interactions between drugs, herbs, foods and nutrients. These interaction has several implications involving in altered safety profiles and efficacy of the modern drugs and the Herbs as well due to a change in the metabolic and physiologic effect.These interactions result from either inhibition or induction of the CYP enzyme isoforms which may be largely reversible. Thus it become extremely important to understand the mechanistic basis of these interactions
