Cognitive distortions are patterns of biased thinking that can lead to inaccurate perceptions and negative emotions. They have a significant impact on mental health by contributing to various psychological issues such as anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. When individuals consistently engage in distorted thinking patterns, they may perceive situations more negatively than they actually are, leading to heightened stress and emotional distress.
For example, someone prone to catastrophizing may constantly anticipate the worst-case scenario, which can increase anxiety and prevent them from effectively coping with challenges.
Over time, these distorted thinking patterns can reinforce negative beliefs about oneself, others, and the world, contributing to a cycle of negative emotions and behaviors.
Therapy, particularly cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), is highly effective in addressing cognitive distortions and promoting healthier thinking patterns. In therapy, individuals learn to identify their own cognitive distortions by becoming more aware of their thoughts and emotions. Clients learn to question the accuracy and validity of their negative thoughts and examine alternative, more balanced perspectives.
