The Hindu concept of 'Moksha' or 'Nirvana' as it is called in Buddhism, provides a tangible contrast to heaven and hell. After death, depending on karma, you can achieve Moksha/Nirvana and earn eternal bliss by ceasing to exist or you can get stuck reincarnating as particular forms of wildlife until you finally achieve Moksha/Nirvana and are released. How long you are stuck in reincarnation and what you reincarnate as depends on your karma. The time at which you reincarnate is variable so it is possible to reincarnate when the dinosaurs lived. These lives spent as particular forms of wildlife ameliorate hellbound souls until they achieve Moksha/Nirvana.

The soul is located in our sub conscious and is connected through the final 5th dimension to the exceedingly complex observer God that can determine a souls fate.
