Myeloma, also known as multiple myeloma, is a type of cancer that affects plasma cells, a type of white blood cell that produces antibodies to help fight infections. In myeloma, abnormal plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow and produce large amounts of abnormal proteins called monoclonal antibodies, which can damage organs and tissues. Myeloma can also cause the bones to become weakened and brittle, leading to fractures and bone pain. The exact cause of myeloma is unknown, but it is more common in older adults and those with a family history of the disease..
