🎗️ Understanding Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy in Breast Cancer Surgery 🎗️

A sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is a crucial procedure to determine whether breast cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. It is less invasive and can reduce the risk of complications like lymphedema, providing essential staging information for further treatment. 🩺

🌟 Benefits of SLNB:

Minimal invasiveness compared to traditional lymph node dissection.
Reduced risk of complications like swelling.
Helps guide the treatment plan based on cancer's spread.
If the sentinel node is cancer-free, further node removal may not be necessary! 💪

🌸 Breast Reconstruction After Cancer Surgery: Approaches to Know 🌸

Breast reconstruction is a deeply personal choice after cancer surgery, with several options to consider:

1️⃣ Implant-Based Reconstruction

• Uses silicone or saline implants to recreate breast shape. It’s a quicker procedure with a shorter recovery time.

2️⃣ Flap Reconstruction

• Tissue from other parts of your body (e.g., abdomen, back) is used for reconstruction, offering a more natural appearance.

3️⃣ Fat Grafting

• Fat taken from areas like the thighs or belly is injected into the breast for a natural feel and shape.

4️⃣ Ni**le Reconstruction

• Following breast reconstruction, some women choose ni**le reconstruction or 3D tattooing for a realistic look.

5️⃣ Going Flat

• Some women choose not to undergo reconstruction and embrace their natural post-surgery body, sometimes using prosthetics.

🧬 Did You Know Your Genes Can Affect Your Cancer Risk? 🧬

Genetic factors play a significant role in determining your risk for certain cancers. Here’s what you need to know:

Inherited Genetic Mutations:

• Mutations like BRCA1 and BRCA2 increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancers.

Family History:

• A strong family history of cancer may suggest inherited gene mutations.

Prevention & Screening:

• People with genetic mutations can benefit from frequent screenings, preventive surgeries, or lifestyle changes to lower their cancer risk.

Genetic Testing:

• If cancer runs in your family, genetic testing can help you understand your risk and guide prevention strategies.

🟣 Prostate Cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men, especially those above 50. Early detection can save lives!

🛑 1. SUSPECT:

• Early-stage prostate cancer often shows no symptoms.
• Possible signs: difficulty urinating, blood in urine or semen, pain in the lower back/hips, or erectile dysfunction.
• Risk factors: age, family history, and poor diet.

🩺 2. DIAGNOSE:

• Diagnosis starts with a PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test or Digital Re**al Exam (DRE).
• If abnormalities are found, further tests like a biopsy or MRI may be needed.

⚖️ 3. STAGE:

• After diagnosis, doctors will stage the cancer, from Stage I (localized) to Stage IV (spread to other parts of the body).

💡 4. TREATMENT:

• For slow-growing prostate cancer, active surveillance might be enough.
• Other treatments include:
• Surgery
• Radiation Therapy
• Hormone Therapy
• Chemotherapy

🧑‍⚕️ Take Action Today! Early detection is key to fighting prostate cancer. Talk to your doctor about screening options!

Sharing few glimpses & an excellent experience from a recent visit to Bareilly at Shri Ram Murty Smarak Medical College, where I was invited as a Faculty, at a regional CME on Locally Advanced Oral cancers. The centre delivers high quality cancer care in a comprehensive manner. Highly impressed by the Surgical Oncology department headed by Dr. Shubhanshu Gupta, who happens to be my dear friend from MBBS days, along with Dr. Siddhant Singh, another dear colleague. Sate of the art surgical work in tune with recent advances & evidence as the guide, including hashtag is done there. Besides this, within the Bareilly city, there are other highly qualified surgeons, including Surgical Oncology, and physicians from various fields who are managing their fields meticulously. I learned that a lot of patients in and around that area, are getting benefitted from this Institute, who would have otherwise travelled to far off places like Delhi / NCR in need of quality cancer care. It echoes my thoughts “Cancer Care near the doorsteps” & I hope we see more of such centres in near future. Fortunate to meet friends, senior & make new connections.
