Why it’s important to visualise an impacted tooth in all sections? Here, we can see a horizontally impacted tooth. When we see in the 2d view, we can see a single straight root. However, a detailed cross section and Sagittal view reveals 2 roots, and severe Dilaceration of the apical third of the distal root. This information becomes of significant importance during extraction.

A 23 year old male reported with a huge swelling in the right lower face region. History revealed that patient had the swelling since 12 years, and had gradually increased to the present size. Physical examination revealed a bony hard swelling in the right body of the mandible.

Radiographic examination revealed a well defined radiopaque lesion in the right body of the mandible. The lesion was unilateral, no signs of the lesion in the Ramus and TMJ region. The interior of the lesion shows ground glass appearance. Expansion of the cortical plates is present, with maintenance of a thinned outer cortex. Displacement of the roots of 46 and 47 are present.
The Radiographic Impression is suggestive of Fibrous Dysplasia of the right body of the mandible. Differential diagnosis of Ossifying Fibroma was given.

Fibrous Dysplasia is rarely seen in the mandible. It is mostly seen in the maxilla.
