A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO TREAT - BONE AND MUSCLE AILMENTS
Debarati Sen
Tdrug-free and non invasive have always been popular, but there are not too many who practice this approach in the city. We spoke to Mathilde Richou, a qualified osteopath who holds an M.Ost from British School of Osteopathy (London) and a certificate in Phlebotomy among others, to know more about this branch of treatment.
Tell us about osteopathy.
We are nonpharmacological don't prescribe drugs and our treatment is non-invasive Osteopaths only use their hands to treat. The branch focuses on treating and strengthening the muscu loskeletal framework o joints, muscles and spine. It aims to positively affect the body's nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems. There are different types of tech niques that could be exercise based. It could be me stretch ing the muscles or mobilising the joints. I also work on the lymphatic system, circulatory system and the nervous sys tem in combination. In osteopathy , we see the body as a whole. It's a holistic image There is no age limit on whom this can be practised. It is very safe and mostly , it is only func tional techniques where the patient is very docile.
How does it work?
Say for instance, if you have back pain, I will look at your hips, the way you walk, the biomechanics of your lower leg and stomach infections that has worked on the muscles and tightened it and created restriction in your spine. I will also find out if you have problems in your shoulder, while breathing problems or stress cold or infection that has changed the dynamics of the way you move your ribs, which could have led to your back pain. It could also be just a postural problem. I see the body as a whole and not just as individual parts.
What is it good for?
Osteopathy is good for acute conditions. It relieves you quickly. Otherwise, in chronic conditions, it takes longer, but is very good because we manage the entire lifestyle -diet, exercise, sleep patterns etc.
Why should patients come to you?
Because I can guarantee that you will have a practitioner who actually cares for you. My cure is non-invasive, I am not pumping up any drugs in you.Whatever happens, you are not going to get any worse than this. Osteopathy is so gentle in its techniques that even when you mobilise joints, there is very little chance that it can hurt. It is not intense, and most patients who come to me even fall asleep during the process.
What is the difference between a chiropractor and an osteopath?
Osteopathy is a primary care profession, focusing on the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders, and the effects of these conditions on patients' general health. Osteopaths seek to
restore the optimal functioning of the body , which are possible without the use of drugs or surgery . It is based on the principle that the body has the ability to heal, and osteopathic care focuses on strengthening the musculoskeletal systems to treat existing conditions and to prevent illness.Osteopaths' patient-centred approach means they consider symptoms in the context of the patient's full medical history , as well as their lifestyle and personal circumstances. This holistic approach ensures that all treatment is tailored to the individual patient.Chiropractic is a primary contact health profession that specialises in the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and management of conditions that are due to problems with the bones, joints, muscles and nerves, particularly those of the spine. Chiropractors work on all parts of the body , concentrating particularly on the spine, using their hands to perform skilled, precise manipulation. They support their treatment with a range of other techniques as well as advice about the patient's lifestyle, work and exercise. As you can see, the two seem very similar by description. The realism is that there are as many differences between practitioners of the same discipline as between the field.
Osteopathy can be availed at Orthofit, which over 16 years, has acquired skills, experience and certification from experts of international repute to introduce in India the biomechanics related to non-invasive medical science and providing solution to more than 50,000 patients.
