A picture from when I was felicitated by the Governor, Karnataka State, India, Padma Bhushan, Shri TN Chaturvedi.

I had bagged 1st rank (& three Gold Medals) in Bangalore University, for securing highest aggregate percentage in four semesters of M.Sc (all streams).

Was among 75 university first rank holders, out of 31,698 students (of all courses) from 400 Bangalore colleges, who earned their Bachelors, Masters, and PhDs that year.

Felicitation took place in the annual convocation of the university, graced by eminent personalities of Karnataka including: Padma Vibhushan M.N. Venkatachalaiah (former Chief Justice of India), Padma Bhushan C.D. Narasimhaiah (author), Padma Bhushan R.K. Srikantan (vocalist) and Padma Shri Kadri Gopalnath (saxophonist).

Hard work pays.

*CoviShield and CoVaxin: Key Technology Difference*

1. CoviShield and CoVaxin differ from each another in a key area, namely the *Vaccine Technology Platform (VTP)*. Where VTP is the science used to create a vaccine.

2. Almost 6 -7 types of Vaccine Technology Platforms exist worldwide e.g. Conventional or Killed Virus Platform, mRNA platform, Viral Vector Platform, DNA platform etc.

3. *CoviShield* developed by Oxford University, UK and Astra Zeneca uses a *Viral Vector Platform*. A novel platform believed to produce a more effective immune response vs conventional Vaccine Technology Platforms.

In this, a virus whose ability to replicate has been curbed, acts as a transport (like a car) to deliver a genetic material (a passenger) into the human body. The passenger on entry into the body, writes a message summoning a antigen (think of the antigen as the villain). The antigen thus summoned/created and makes the body feel its under attack and the body then produces antibodies against the antigen-villain.

In simple speak, CoviShield uses an adenovirus (non replicating) of a chimpanzee, as a car, and a piece of genetic material as the passenger, to create the villain, namely the S glycoprotein released by the crown spikes of the Corona virus, to trigger the human bodys immune response.

4. *Covaxin* produced by BharatBiotech, India, developed in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) - National Institute of Virology (NIV) uses the *Conventional Killed Virus* Platform.

This vaccine uses the most time tested, vaccine technology platform known to man, which is used to innoculate humans against Polio to Diphtheria to Whooping Cough to Seasonal Influenza.

In this the disease causing virus is killed to destroy its disease producing capacity while still retaining its ability to produce an immune response.

CoVaxin contains whole virion inactivated SARS
CoV-2 antigen Strain NIV-2020-770. This on entry into the body triggers an immune response.

My Personal Top Tips for Lockdown Anxiety

I have worked on these and they help me. Hope they help you too.

1. Accept, Dont Resist.
Accept things are not OK right now. Acceptance may appear weak, & resistance brave. Its not. Darwin’s “Survival of the Fittest” refers to a species ability to accomodate a change, not fight it.

2. Observe, Dont Engage.
Having a frightening thought? Tell yourself “My thoughts are not me”. Observe your thought. Do not engage with it. It will pass. Eventually.

3. Trust Your Resilience
A newborn overcomes mortal risks during the journey from the mothers womb to the world, guided by nature, instinct, & genes. As a human created out of millions of years of evolution, beating hundreds of other species in the race to supremacy, you have it to survive. Trust your resilience. You will not perish so easily.

4. Mini the Negative, Max the Positive
Dont be a ma*****st & shine the spotlight on everything going wrong in your life now. Minimize the negative. Take away its importance. Now, maximize the positive. Even if its just one. Your brain believes the story you tell it, make it a happy one.

5. Simple Things.
Try revisiting The Simple Things to destress. Eg: Do something for your parents. A act which may give them great joy maybe? Voicenote or write down their fondest memories and gift it to them. What say?

2008-2020. Looking back at some honors I, a military “brat” raised in small towns across India managed to line up, in my career as pioneer medical dietitian for challenging diseases, India.

I did it all alone. No Godmothers. No publicity. No sponsors. No helping hands. Ok, maybe God’s 🙂

I have mixed feelings about being shortlisted for an honorary professional doctorate in Nutrition & Dietetics by European International University.

Happy, as its a coveted prefix to any professional's name. Weird, as I feel am at the starting marker in my work to bag this, and my professional destination is miles ahead. Still weirder as I never opt for anything which I have not earned by tangible work (well wishers say, I have, owing to my contribution to my field. I feel an urge to resist their opinions just the same!)

N-Series vs P-Series Pollution Masks

Not all pollution masks a.k.a Particulate Filtering Facepiece Respirators are the same. There are the N-series, of which the N95 is perhaps what you’ve been asked to buy by most news portals or dailies. There’s also the P-series, which is superior to the N. Why arent we told about better options is something which bothered me for years, before I learnt how news based marketing works. It worked by talking about the same thing over and over again. I am very sure saturating the customers brain by rote, does not work anymore. Doesnt for me. For now do read this piece by the USA based government body, the Center for Disease Control, a credible organization and please buy a suitable piece of self and family. Better have one handy than go around running for one during emergencies when the stocks are less and price gets inflated! https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/npptl/topics/respirators/disp_part/default.html

Found my name to be leading the section under Best Dietitians in India, in this French book "Santé et Beauté dans mon Assiette" (read: Health and Beauty on My Plate) by author Laurent Poret. A positive start to 2020, so hoping for a fruitful year with key milestones. Oh, and the Kindle version of the book is on amazon.com.
