🐝 Occasionally, I spot a bee carrying plant resin on her legs instead of pollen. That resin is the raw ingredient for propolis — the sticky, protective glue bees create to seal cracks, reinforce their hive, and secure loose parts.

It’s so strong that beekeepers have to pry hive boxes apart with a special tool… the bees glue everything together with purpose. Nature’s construction crew at work. 💛🔧

🥤🐝 Sometimes, foragers collect water. To help cool the interior of the hive in hot weather, honeybees spread water on the wax honeycomb and fan with their wings to evaporate it. Evaporation creates a cooling effect.

🐝 When the weather is too cold, windy, or wet, honeybees stay inside the hive. They can delay defecation for weeks if necessary. On warmer days in the winter, they will leave the hive to relieve themselves. This is referred to as a cleansing flight. After days of near freezing temperatures and rain, these bees took advantage of a few warm afternoon hours to make cleansing flights.
