As an obstetrician, I meet many moms-to-be who are surprised to learn that thyroid disorders can directly affect pregnancy. But the good news is, with early diagnosis and the right treatment, we can ensure a completely healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.

Your thyroid hormones play a major role in your baby’s brain and nervous system development. That’s why symptoms like fatigue, palpitations, weight fluctuations, or hair fall should never be ignored especially when you’re pregnant or planning to conceive.

During pregnancy, I always check TSH and Free T3/T4 levels and monitor them closely every few weeks. If needed, thyroid medication is absolutely safe, and adjusting the dose is key. Balanced nutrition, adequate iodine, and regular follow-up help keep everything on track.

If you’ve been diagnosed with hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, please remember:
A controlled thyroid = a safe pregnancy.

Stay consistent with your medicines, get your tests on time, and don’t hesitate to ask questions.

We’re here to guide you at every step. 💛

A newly married patient came to me extremely anxious. She got married just 15 days ago, but her reports showed that her pregnancy was already one and a half months old, and she was worried about how to explain this to her family.

I explained to her something very important:
Pregnancy age is ALWAYS calculated from the date of your last menstrual period (LMP), not from the date of ovulation or in*******se.
That’s because ovulation differs from woman to woman, but LMP gives us a fixed and reliable timeline.

In her case, she conceived after marriage, exactly when she was ovulating, but her last period was one and a half months ago, so naturally the pregnancy is counted from that cycle.

Her ultrasound parameters are absolutely perfect, the dating matches her LMP, and we have already detected a healthy heartbeat. Everything is normal and healthy.

I reassured her that she has conceived after marriage, and this is simply how pregnancy dating works. And if she faces any difficulty explaining this to her family, I am always here to support her.

Pregnancy is a journey of understanding, and I’m here to walk you through every step with clarity and care.

Back pain during pregnancy is extremely common, but understanding why it happens can help you manage it better.

I explained to a patient today that there are four major reasons behind pregnancy-related back pain:

1. Poor posture
As the tummy grows and the breasts become heavier, many women unknowingly begin to slouch. This puts extra pressure on the spine and back muscles.

2. Loosening of ligaments
Hormonal changes during pregnancy relax the ligaments around the back and pelvic region. This provides space for the baby to grow but also reduces stability, triggering pain.

3. Lordosis (increased spinal arch)
When the abdomen protrudes forward, the spine automatically arches more than usual. This shifts the upper body weight onto the back and legs, causing strain.

4. Weak core muscles
If you stand for long periods or sit without support, weak abdominal muscles cannot hold the posture resulting in pain.

What can you do?
- Avoid slouching; sit straight with proper back support
- Place a pillow between your legs while lying down
- Use a maternity belt to support your bump
- Apply warm compression when the pain increases
- Wear well-fitted bras with broad straps or sports bras for better posture
- Practice pregnancy-safe yoga like cat-cow, child’s pose, and butterfly stretch
- Take your Magnesium, Calcium and Vitamin D supplements as advised

However, if your back pain shifts toward the lower belly, or you experience va**nal bleeding or leaking, please seek medical care immediately.

Pregnancy is a beautiful journey with the right posture, support and guidance, you can stay comfortable and pain-free.

Today in my counselling session, I met a patient who was understandably worried after noticing some spotting. After examining her, I explained that her baby is safe. What we found is a low-lying placenta, which is a common condition and often the reason behind light bleeding during pregnancy.

When the placenta sits lower than usual, even simple activities like lifting weight, standing for long periods, or putting pressure on the pelvic area can trigger spotting. That’s why I’ve advised her to avoid exertion, take her prescribed Iron and Calcium supplements, and be mindful of her daily movements.

Some simple precautions I recommend:
- Do household chores in a seated position like cutting vegetables
- Limit the use of staircases
- Avoid lifting anything heavy (even if you have another child)
- Take frequent breaks and don’t stand for too long

The good news is that in many cases, the placenta moves upward naturally as the uterus expands. If it does, things usually return to normal. If it doesn’t migrate, then a C-section becomes the safest delivery option, as normal delivery is ruled out in such cases.

A little care, rest, and timely follow-up can make all the difference. If you ever experience spotting during pregnancy, don’t panic. Consult your doctor immediately.

I’m always here to guide you through every step of this journey.

In pregnancy, your body speaks to you, and some symptoms should never be ignored. I’m sharing the key red flags every expecting mother must know for her own safety and her baby’s well-being.

1. Severe headache or blurring of vision

If your headache does not improve even after taking paracetamol, or you see flashes, blurring, or spots in your vision, it may indicate rising blood pressure or the onset of preeclampsia. This condition can affect the brain, kidneys, and placenta. So immediate medical evaluation is essential.

2. Sudden swelling of hands, feet, or face

Mild swelling is normal, but sudden, excessive, or persistent swelling can point toward fluid retention associated with high blood pressure disorders. Never ignore it.

3. Bleeding or spotting at any stage

Bleeding may occur due to reasons like placenta previa, threatened miscarriage, or placental abruption. Even light spotting should be checked, because early intervention can prevent complications.

4. Reduced fetal movements

Your baby’s movements are the biggest indicator of well-being. A sudden drop in movements may signal uteroplacental insufficiency, decreased oxygen supply, or fetal distress. After meals, you should feel 4-5 movements; throughout the day at least 10-12. If not, get evaluated immediately.

5. Leaking fluid with abdominal pain
Clear watery discharge from the va**na could be rupture of membranes. If this is accompanied by severe or increasing abdominal pain, it may indicate preterm labor or an infection risk. This is an emergency. See your doctor without delay.

Pregnancy is a delicate journey, and timely action can save both mother and baby. If you notice any of these warning signs, do not wait. Seek medical help right away.

Today, we’re seeing a concerning trend, that is girls in India getting their first periods as early as 8 years of age. As a doctor, I meet many worried parents, and I completely understand their concern. At such a young age, a child is emotionally and mentally unprepared to handle sudden body changes, hormonal shifts, and social expectations.

So why is this happening?

A major reason is our modern lifestyle. Highly processed and ultra-processed foods packed with preservatives, artificial flavors, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals can trigger early hormonal activation. Packaged snacks, sugary beverages, instant foods, all of these affect the delicate hormonal balance in growing children.

Another culprit is hormone-treated dairy and meat. Growth hormones used in animals can indirectly influence early puberty in children.

Add to this obesity and lack of physical activity. Excess body fat leads to higher estrogen levels, which can trigger early periods.

Even excessive screen time, reduced sleep, stress, exposure to plastics containing BPA, environmental pollutants, and pesticides in fruits and vegetables, all contribute to earlier onset of puberty.

Early periods don’t just cause emotional stress. They are linked to higher risks of PCOS, obesity, anxiety, and metabolic issues later in life.

As parents, caregivers, and doctors, our goal must be awareness and early intervention. Healthy eating, physical activity, reducing packaged foods, avoiding plastic containers, and encouraging outdoor play can make a big difference.

If you notice early signs of puberty in your child, don’t panic, but do seek medical guidance.

Ectopic pregnancy is one of the most important early-pregnancy conditions every woman must be aware of. It occurs when the embryo implants outside the uterus, most commonly in the fallopian tube, and if not identified early, it can become a medical emergency.

In my practice, I often see women confuse the early symptoms with normal pregnancy discomforts. But persistent one-sided lower abdominal pain, spotting, dizziness, or shoulder tip pain should never be ignored. These are red flags that need immediate medical evaluation.

With timely diagnosis through ultrasound and serial Beta-hCG tests, ectopic pregnancy can be managed safely through medication or minimally invasive surgery. And yes, most women can go on to have a completely normal pregnancy in the future.

Awareness saves lives.
Early action preserves fertility.
If you ever experience symptoms like these, please consult your doctor without delay.

When a 32-year-old patient came to me wanting to delay pregnancy, I explained something every woman should know: we are born with around two million eggs, and this number starts declining from the very first period.

By the age of 30, only about 30,000 eggs remain, and by 35, this drops drastically to nearly 8,000. This natural decline affects not just fertility, but also the quality of eggs.

That’s why pregnancies after 30 come with higher chances of miscarriage, high-risk pregnancy, and chromosomal abnormalities like Down Syndrome or Autism. I always tell my patients, if you’re healthy and ready, don’t delay conception without a strong reason.

But life doesn’t follow a fixed timeline, and many women need more time due to emotional, career or financial reasons. In such cases, I strongly recommend egg freezing. Freezing eggs preserves their current age and quality, giving you the option of a healthier IVF pregnancy later, whenever you’re ready.

If you plan to conceive naturally, it’s crucial to prepare your body. I advise starting folic acid supplements at least 3 months before planning, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing weight, avoiding stress, and ensuring both partners follow nutritious habits.

My goal, through this medium, is to help every woman make informed choices for a healthy, safe future pregnancy.

Pregnancy Talk with Dr. Pragya and Dr. Poornima

Stretch marks and hair fall during pregnancy are very common, and both can be managed with the right care.

Stretch Marks:
The best time to apply a moisturizer is when the skin is slightly damp after a shower. A moisturizer containing Hyaluronic Acid helps improve skin elasticity and reduces the chances of developing stretch marks as the belly grows. Start early, moisturize daily, and keep the stomach area well hydrated.

Hair Loss During and After Pregnancy:
Hormonal changes can lead to temporary hair thinning. This is normal, but supporting your hair with doctor-guided vitamin supplements, an iron and protein-rich diet, and treatments like PRP or GFC can help speed up recovery and improve hair strength.

Additional Tip:
Stay hydrated, avoid harsh chemical treatments during pregnancy, and follow a simple skincare and haircare routine for better long-term results.

Did you know a natural compound called Berberine can play a vital role in managing PCOS?

I often meet women struggling with irregular periods, weight gain, acne, and insulin resistance, all linked to PCOS. While lifestyle changes remain the foundation of treatment, certain natural supplements like Berberine have shown promising results.

Berberine works by improving insulin sensitivity, reducing inflammation, and restoring hormonal balance, much like Metformin, but derived from plants such as barberry and goldenseal.

Potential benefits:
- Regularizes ovulation and cycles
- Helps manage weight
- Reduces excess androgens (male hormones)
- Supports fertility and overall metabolic health

However, remember, natural doesn’t mean harmless.

Berberine is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and dosage must always be guided by your doctor.

A balanced diet, physical activity, and the right medical supervision can truly change the PCOS story for many women.

Protein is the building block of life, and during pregnancy, it becomes even more vital for both the mother and the baby.

Adequate protein intake is essential for the baby’s growth, brain development, and the health of the placenta. A pregnant woman needs around 70–75 grams of protein per day, but most vegetarian Indian diets fall short of this requirement.

That’s where whey protein comes in - a safe and effective way to bridge this nutritional gap when chosen carefully and in consultation with your doctor. It helps support healthy muscle mass, steady energy levels, and optimal fetal growth.

Pregnancy utrition is all about eating right.

Calf pain is one of the most common complaints during pregnancy, but it’s also one that should never be ignored.

In this reel, I explain why many expecting mothers experience pain, tightness, or cramps in the calf muscles, especially at night or after long periods of standing. The main causes include poor circulation, extra pressure on leg veins, and mineral deficiencies like calcium and magnesium.

Simple remedies often help. Try warm salt-water fermentation, gentle leg stretches, and light massage to relax the muscles. Also, ensure you’re getting enough magnesium and calcium in your diet or supplements.

However, if the pain becomes severe, the leg feels swollen, red, or unusually warm, it could be a sign of DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis), a serious condition that needs immediate medical attention.

Remember, not every pain is normal in pregnancy. Listen to your body and consult your doctor when something doesn’t feel right.
