In Chapter XI we have stressed the need for one meal a day and how gradually we could come to that stage. We have however not discussed how much to eat, how to eat, and what factors effect food, and how. Food and drink, as we have seen, is one of the three ways in which the human body takes in coded impulses. Let us examine what care should be taken, and how.
It is an absolutely undeniable fact, whether we like it or not, that one should observe silence while eating. Besides this, the other rule we have to observe is that one good morsel for each hour of the day, i.e. twenty-four morsels in that one meal would be good quantity of food intake. To avoid this many left homes for ashram life and adopted brahmacharya little realising that this was a big step to escape the realities of life; that God and Nature will force them again and again to ghrahasthi (householder) life style.
So, the sages finally arrived at a way of breathing; a natural, full twenty four hour rhythmic breathing (the last noted exponent was sage Patanjali) which could have the effect of the various special breathing exercises together with the noted asanas and that such a natural and effortless breathing technique based on sound scientific fact, would give the desired result.

This presupposes that the mind state which is one of 'at rest' always does not work through memory and so it's conclusions are free from prejudices of the past and free from the pairs of the opposites i.e. emotions. What is this 'at rest' condition of mind and therefore of the intuitive perception? No individual can live in this world and be free from the assaults of the world that impinge through the five senses and imagination. But in this state of mind 'at rest' seeing, hearing, etc. are experienced totally detached as one would a stranger and without analysis, remarks or suggestions, and this is possible because memory is not involved that creates such emotions and one is free from doubt, fear and uncertainty.

If we have, by now, cut down our hours of sleep, altered our food habits, and perfected the three-step rhythmic breathing, we have, indeed, gone a long way, though much still remains to be done. The one great additional advantage that will accrue will be saving of valuable time by cutting down the hours of sleep and much that still remains to be done can be profitably done during these hours.

The sages who discovered the science of svar-nadi relationship realised that the breath is a powerful and tremendous force. At first they came out with various breathings aided by various asanas. Hence creation of the important branch of Hatha Yoga. Side by side originated the Bhakti Yoga, Gnana Yoga, Laya Yoga, Raj Yoga and so forth.

Details - Sutra 43 says - เคธเฅเคฎเฅƒเคคเคฟเคชเคฐเคฟเคถเฅเคฆเฅเคงเฅŒ เคธเฅเคตเคฐเฅ‚เคชเคถเฅ‚เคจเฅเคฏเฅ‡เคตเคพเคฐเฅเคฅเคฎเคพเคคเฅเคฐเคจเคฟเคฐเฅเคญเคพเคธเคพ เคจเคฟเคฐเฅเคตเคฟเคคเคฐเฅเค•เคพ

which is translated as "Nirvitarka [samฤpatti] happens on the purification of memory. It is as though [citta] empties itself of identity. There is a shining of the object alone.โ€

Tavariaji translates this as โ€œPerception without judicial reasoning (or intuition) is arrived at when the memory no longer holds control, the word and the object are transcended, and only the idea is present. โ€œ
