🧠 MRS Sequence in MRI (Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy)
📌 What is MRS?
MRS stands for Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy.
It is a technique used to detect chemical changes in body tissues, especially the brain.
⸻
🧪 What does MRS measure?
It shows a spectrum (graph) of various metabolites like:
• NAA (N-acetylaspartate) → Neuronal health
• Choline (Cho) → Cell membrane turnover
• Creatine (Cr) → Energy metabolism
• Lactate → Anaerobic metabolism (may indicate tumor or stroke)
Each peak on the spectrum corresponds to a specific metabolite.
⸻
📊 Sample Spectrum:
✅ High NAA → Normal neurons
✅ High Cho → Tumor or demyelination
✅ Low NAA → Neuronal loss
The example below shows normal MRS pattern:

📍 Uses of MRS:
1- Neurology ; MRS to evaluated brain tumors , multiple sclerosis or stroke.
2- Oncology ; assesses tumor composition and response to therapy by analyzing metabolite levels.
3- Cardiology ; can be used to study myocardial ischemia or metabolism .
4- Musculoskeletal disorders . help in assessing metabolic changes in muscle and cartilage .
