Play and Therapy - Here’s a reason why they go well together!🤹♀️
Children learn about themselves and the world through play, which they spontaneously practice from a very young age.
Play based therapy builds on the natural way children use to interact with the world, to help them build skills, make connections, and develop emotionally.
Through play therapy, children learn to communicate with others, express feelings, modify behavior, develop problem-solving skills, and learn a variety of ways of relating to others.
Play provides a safe psychological distance from their problems and allows expression of thoughts and feelings appropriate to their development.
But the biggest strength of play as a therapeutic tool is its ability to foster deep connection: while playing with a child, you go on a journey with them, sharing the moments of intense joy, but also being present for the difficult ones, the frustration, the impulsivity, all the wide range of emotions.
In play situations, difficulties that are typical of daily life present as well and this makes it a great tool to create that “just the right challenge” for the child, while modeling and supporting them through the difficulties they are experiencing.
This will help the child in generalizing what they learned from the context of a safe, meaningful interaction through play to daily life situations.
Play is exercise for the child’s brain and body that fosters meaningful connections and enhances the development of emotional health.
