The project was born thanks to the collaboration between Professors Claudio Tiribelli and Richard Wennberg. Their goal was to find a simple solution to eradicate Kernicterus, a preventable disease that affects thousands of new-borns worldwide.
The problem is particularly acute in low income countries due to structural and economic barriers that make jaundice a very difficult problem to tackle. With over 30 years of experience in clinical and basic bilirubin research, they identified these barriers and proposed strategies to end this tragedy.
From their analysis emerged that most cases of Kernicterus are caused by late diagnosis of jaundice, failure to evaluate risk factors of severe jaundice and failure to monitor infants after discharge.
In response to these deficiencies, Professors Tiribelli and Wennberg focused on developing a low-cost, quick and portable diagnostic system that can measure total bilirubin concentration in new-born’s blood.
