๐ Nipah virus cases in India: ECDC highlights ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ ๐น๐ผ๐ ๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ธ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐๐๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฝ๐ฒ and the value of surveillance.
Two confirmed cases of Nipah virus disease have been reported in West Bengal, India (January 2026). At ECDC, based on current information, we assess the risk of infection for people from Europe travelling to or residing in the area as very low.

๐ฆ Nipah virus is a zoonotic pathogen carried by fruit bats. Human infection can occur through direct contact with infected animals, contaminated food, or close contact with infected individuals. The disease can be severe, with neurological involvement and high case fatality reported in previous outbreaks in South and Southeast Asia.

โก๏ธ There is no evidence of community transmission to date.

โก๏ธ Ecological and epidemiological factors support ๐ฎ ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ ๐น๐ผ๐ ๐น๐ถ๐ธ๐ฒ๐น๐ถ๐ต๐ผ๐ผ๐ฑ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฑ ๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ป๐๐บ๐ถ๐๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฝ๐ฒ.
โ๏ธ For EU/EEA travellers to the affected area, ECDC advises standard precautions such as avoiding contact with wild or domestic animals and their waste, not consuming potentially contaminated food (including raw date palm sap), and maintaining good food hygiene.
