The primary purpose of a Pap smear is to detect changes in the cells of the cervix that could lead to cervical cancer. It can also help identify infections, inflammation, and other conditions. A Pap smear is generally a quick and relatively painless procedure where a sample of cells is collected from the cervix to test. There may be some discomfort, but it shouldn't be painful.
