Too Messy for the Message
“For we are the circumcision which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.” – Philippians 3:3 (KJV)
“And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” – Genesis 6:5 (KJV)
“But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; for I have rejected him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.” – 1 Samuel 16:7 (KJV)
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” – 1 John 1:9 (KJV)
Reflection
The world often tells us that we must be polished, perfect, and “presentable” before we can be used by God. Yet the Scriptures repeatedly show that God’s power is made perfect in our weakness and messiness. In Philippians, Paul declares that true worship is not about outward rituals but about a heart that rejoices in Christ, regardless of our flaws.
Genesis reminds us that humanity’s “great wickedness” was not a barrier to God’s redemptive plan; it was the very reason He sent a Saviour. God looks beyond the surface, as Samuel learned when He chose David—a shepherd boy—over the outwardly impressive sons of Jesse.
When we feel too messy to share the gospel, we forget that the message itself is not dependent on our perfection. It is the Holy Spirit who convicts, transforms, and empowers. Our part is to confess our sins daily, receive God’s forgiveness, and step out in humility, trusting that He will use even our brokenness for His glory.
When we daily give our brokenness to God, like the potter, He will continue working on us and renewing His will in us, while we work on purpose, fulfilling His purpose.
