The Psychological Impact of Hurricane Melissa
Hurricane Melissa didn’t just shake our homes—
it shook our nervous systems, our sense of safety, and the emotional balance we rely on to feel grounded.
Many people across Jamaica are now experiencing:
• Sleeplessness or nightmares
• Irritability or emotional overwhelm
• Feeling numb, drained, or disconnected
• Anxiety every time it rains or the wind blows
• Mental fatigue from trying to rebuild while still in shock
• Survivor’s guilt — “Why did I survive when others lost so much?”
These reactions are normal, but they are also signs that the mind and body are still in survival mode.
Trauma—especially from natural disasters—can sit silently in the body long after the storm has passed.
And many of us are carrying more than we’re saying.
But hear this:
You don’t have to rebuild your mind alone.
Healing is possible with the right support, the right tools, and a safe space to process what you’ve been through.
