Happy birthday to Godfrey Newbold Hounsfield! He is the scientist behind computerised axial tomography (CAT) scanners, also known as CT scanners.

CT scans involve specialized cameras that can track X-rays, positrons or photons to take measurements and create images taken from several different angles. The result is a cross-sectional image. In medicine, CT scans are used to create images of what’s happening inside of a patient’s body. The resulting images help health specialists diagnose a variety of health conditions. CT scans are also used in other sectors, like industry where they help to analyse objects for quality control purposes.

Hounsfield's initial CT scanner design could only scan brains, but he later built machines able to scan the whole body. For his contributions to this field, Hounsfield was awarded the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine together with physicist Allan Cormack.
