children up to 6th grade in elementary school can enjoy unlimited one-day travel for just 100 yen on all local and rapid trains across the entire JR Kyushu network!

【八雲とセツ　ー家族の物語】＠熊本博物館　（〜2026年2月15日）
Yakumo and Setsu: A Family Story 】at Kumamoto City Museum (through February 15, 2026)

小泉八雲（Lafcadio Hearn 1850-1904）は、1891年、第五高等中学校（現・熊本大学）の英語教師として赴任。3年間暮らし、妻セツとの間に長男・一雄が生まれました。
Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo, 1850-1904) arrived in Kumamoto in 1891 to teach English at the Fifth Higher Middle School (now Kumamoto University). He lived here for three years, and his eldest son, Kazuo, was born to him and his wife, Setsu, during this time.

日本に関するはじめての著作『知られぬ日本の面影』も熊本で書き上げ、「夏の日の夢」、「停車場にて」など熊本を舞台にした作品も多くあります。
Hearn's first work on Japan, Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan, was completed right here in Kumamoto, and many of his stories, such as "A Summer Day's Dream" and "At the Station," are set in the city.

本展では八雲とセツ、一雄に関する資料をはじめ、友人西田千太郎に宛てた自筆書簡などを通して、八雲とその家族が紡いだ物語をご紹介されています。
This exhibition introduces the story woven by Hearn and his family through materials related to Yakumo, Setsu, and Kazuo, including Hearn's handwritten letters addressed to his friend, Sentaro Nishida.

今年も 全国各地からの注連縄が揃いました！
宝珠や鶴亀、海老、俵！ 縁起の良いしめ飾りが並びます。
Shime-kazari are traditional Japanese New Year decorations made from rice straw.

This exhibit attracts a large number of people every December.
It's fun to learn about the symbols shown in the wide variety of designs!

熊本市内を通る路線バスと熊本電鉄電車、および市電では、
12月の１ヶ月、クレジットカードによるタッチ決済の運賃が２割引になります。
Are you ready to save some money? For the entire month of December, passengers can receive a 20% discount on fares when using credit card touch payments on buses going through Kumamoto City, the Kumamoto Dentetsu (Kumaden) trains, and the City Trams.

【レオナルド　バルトリーニ　沢田一葉　陶展】＠島田美術館

Leonardo Bartolini & Ichiyo Sawada Ceramic Exhibit at Shimada Museum of Arts (through November 17, 2025)

An exhibit by a Florence-born Leonardo and a Kumamoto native Ichiyo.
イタリア・フィレンツェ出身。陶芸と建築学を学んだバルトリーニ氏は、現在熊本在住。２つの国の歴史的構造物や自然のエネルギーを融合し、「テラ・シジラータ」という技法で、鮮やかなオレンジや黒による作品を生み出している。
Born in Florence, Italy, Mr. Bartolini studied ceramics and architecture in college.
At the exhibit you find works that emerge from the fusion of historical structures and natural energies of the two countries in bright oranges and blacks using the “Terra Sigillata" technique.

沢田一葉氏は熊本出身。2000年に熊本市人づくり基金にて渡伊。その後、様々な国内外での陶芸展での入選に加え、有田国際陶磁展では、2015年文部科学大臣賞、2017年日工会展では内閣総理大臣賞も受賞。
Being from Kumamoto, Ichiyo Sawada first went to Italy in 2000 with a fund from Kumamoto City. Since then she has been recipients of various awards including Arita International Ceramics Competition Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award, and Japan Kougei Nikkoukai Institute Prime Minister Award.
