To 𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 means to withdraw. Yet granting ourselves permission to pause — in a world that perpetuates endless striving — can feel like swimming upstream.

In verse 29 of the Tao we’re reminded that:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“There is a time for being ahead,
a time for being behind;
a time for being in motion,
and a time for being at rest.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
May you find the courage to embrace stillness when it calls. We’ll see some of you on the other side🕊️🕊️🕊️

Gay Block began photographing her mother, Bertha Alyce, in 1973 and continued until she passed in 1991. “But it was after she died,” Block shared in an interview about the work, “that I learned the most about her.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“I began to understand that her anger had its origins in all she had not been able to do because she was a woman.”

The ancient practice of breaking bread — rooted across all Abrahamic faiths — reflects our timeless need for tangible connection. As we approach the holiday season, we’re reminded that the simple act of gathering is a sacred ritual, when imbued with presence and grace.

Gratitude, in the words of Melody Beattie, “can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.”

We can learn a lot from children. The future we aspire to lives in their imaginations. Lebanese Prophet and Poet Khalil Gibran writes in 𝘖𝘯 𝘊𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘯, “You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.”

John Gottman, best known for his groundbreaking research on what makes relationships succeed or fail, identified stonewalling as one of the ‘Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.’ Alongside criticism, defensiveness, and contempt, stonewalling erodes trust, leaving relationships frayed.

The antidote — as theologian and human rights activist Desmond Tutu reminds us above — is to reach out and connect with one another. Suffering softens when we listen to learn. A gentle reminder, as we head into the holiday season, that almost no one changes until they feel heard.

The path into the light seems dark,
the path forward seems to go back,
the direct path seems long,
true power seems weak,
true purity seems tarnished,
true steadfastness seems changeable,
true clarity seems obscure,
the greatest are seems unsophisticated,
the greatest love seems indifferent,
the greatest wisdom seems childish.

The Tao is nowhere to be found.
Yet it nourishes and completes all things.

Mushrooms grow quietly in the shadows — transforming decay into new life. As many move through the grief that autumn ignites, mushrooms remind us to trust the process. Growth often begins galvanizing in the dark. 🍄‍🟫

For whatever reason, we grieve the same way we celebrate — together, through story and connection. We find humility in our shared humanity, recognizing that joy and sorrow are woven from the same thread. Turning to timeless wisdom, music, and art is our way of grounding ourselves amidst the chaos of the human experience.

As students of rites and ritual, we’re reminded that even national traditions, like voting, reflect our commitment to collective healing. ❤️‍🩹

For those in America, the ongoing experiment of democracy calls us to engage in shaping a shared future by participating at the polls.
