DO NOT QUIT YET
Preamble
New year 2020 was celebrated more compared to other years I have witnessed. Many people predicted it to be the year of their breakthrough in every plan/goals/resolutions they had in mind. Fast-forward, it was end of quarter one of the year 2020.Covid-19 hits the entire world to the core shaking everyone and business leading to massive closures, jobs losses and worst still thousands of people losing their lives worldwide.
We all had many plans for our careers, education, family, investments, leisure and health goals to achieve. In less than 3 months of the year, things turned out to be highly volatile for everyone with 80% of Kenyans not knowing where to start from. Emotions coming with this pandemic are many including: - fear, sadness, loneliness, confusion, tardiness, hostility, anger and many more leading to stress and depression.
Sometimes people are asking many questions and looking for answers to why this is happening now. why me? why us? why is it that am the one to loss my job/close my business now? where do I start from here? How about my family, my small child who cannot understand what is going on? How do I pay rent and school fees with 50% pay cut, with unpaid leave? Where are you God? All these and many more are questions replaying over and over again in our minds. Deep and valid concerns that nobody has the answers.
My take is there is light at the end of the tunnel. How about we see things from a different perspective? How about we focus on half full glass rather than half empty? By swiftly changing our perspective and strategically adjusting our lifestyles, we will be positive and not lose hope. Losing hope is the worst that can happen to anyone during this pandemic. We need to fight and do everything within our means to survive this crisis.
There are a few things one can do to remain focused and avoid sliding into depression: -
1. Sort social support from your loved ones- Connect with your family-do not isolate yourself.
2. Focus on the positive side of life –Not all is lost-count your blessings.
3. Avoid too much negative information on social media and forwarded group messages –some are not adding any value to your mental health.
4. Exercise –physical exercises helps release tension and stress.
5. Read a novel, watch your favorite series/ movies.
6. Think out of the Box-What can you do. What opportunity do you see and plan its implementation.
We have the power to take this as a bad break, or a good break that we all needed to change the we way we do things. Do not lose hope no matter what. We will come out stronger than we can imagine. Stay strong. Stay safe and remain focused.
You are a fighter I believe in you!
