MAMA Pii 'Mother water' working with Kenyan communities to improve current maternal health service whilst providing clean water to keep the household healthy.

Water and health are not isolated issues but are part of a wider story. MAMA Pii or 'mother water' will provide proof of concept for an innovative approach to maternal care: combining a strengthened maternal health service (MHS) with provision of safe, accessible and affordable water. A typical pregnant woman in Kenya has two well recognised, daily, problems: collection of safe water and access to maternal health care. Absence of these affect her physical health, wellbeing and chance of surviving childbirth. A lesser known issue we have uncovered in Western Kenya is sex-trade for water. Desperate women are powerless in the decision making essential for the best start for their newborn and existing children.
