ANC/PRENATAL CLINICS; HOW IMPORTANT IS IT?

Antenatal or Prenatal Care is the healthcare you receive while pregnant. It includes a combination of hospital visits, screening, and diagnostic tests, ultrasounds, counselling, education, emotional and social support, and foetal monitoring (i.e. monitoring foetal growth, heart rate, maternal blood pressure, and screening for signs of premature labour).

Almost every study about prenatal care has demonstrated that it improves both foetal and maternal outcomes, especially if the care begins early in the first trimester.

So what is it about prenatal care that makes it so crucial to a successful delivery? Let's break it down.

5 Benefits of Prenatal Care

1. Learn more about your pregnancy and develop a plan:
Your prenatal visit doesn't just confirm your pregnancy, it offers you the chance to discuss different procedures and potential scenarios, and address any questions and concerns with a doctor through your pregnancy. This includes learning and educating yourself about labour, delivery and postpartum birth injuries, so that you can make informed decisions for you and your family and react appropriately when a new situation arrives.

2. Reduce the risk of complications and defects:
Regular screenings, for problems like gestational diabetes, can help prevent complications by detecting it early and providing the right treatment. Screening for congenital abnormalities is at 15-19 weeks.

3. Offer appropriate immunisation:
Vaccines help protect both you and your baby from easily preventable diseases. During pregnancy, a mother's white blood cells act as the first line of defense for their babies. Getting the right vaccines (e.g. flu shot) allows mothers to pass on the kinds of antibodies their baby needs to fight off infections while in the womb.

4. Get accurate nutritional advice:
Your diet will need to go through changes to accommodate for the nutritional needs of your baby. Your doctor will educate you on the recommended dietary intake for the next nine months, including how much to eat, what you should and should not eat.

5. Keep track of development:
Your child's development inside the womb is a good indicator of their health. During prenatal appointments, your doctor may measure your child to see how your baby is growing. Modern technology, such as ultra-sounds may also be used to verify the development of the child, as well as find out the gender.

FINALLY BESTIES, REMEMBER;
Whichever stage of your pregnancy you're in, staying educated about your body and baby's progression is crucial for a healthy pregnancy and delivery.

THE CANCER CONVERSATION : GENDER- RELATED CANCERS AND SCREENING.

Cancer is the scariest,, most life threatening 6- letter word ever invented. You hear it and immediately think end of life! No way out. But really, in simple words, what is cancer? Is it preventable? Is it treatable to some degree, and what are the chances of survival for a person who has cancer of some sort? These are the most vital questions we should be asking, and getting information, on so that we don't live a life of panic and uncertainties.
So, besties! Let's break down this 6 letter jargon, in simple words, shall we?

1. WHAT IS CANCER?
~ Cancer is a disease in which the cells divide or multiply uncontrollably, thus harming body tissues with tumour and affecting the immune system.

2. WHO CAN GET CANCER?
~Any person of any age can get cancer. However, the older one gets the most acceptable they are to risks of cancer. Hold up now! That is not to say that once you're growing old, you'll have to say that panicking about cancer. Definitely not.
~Risk factors such as heavy smoking, poor nutrition, and environmental factors like exposure to radiants, multiple s*xual partners hence risking contracting HPV, genetic predisposition, etc, also come into play.

3 HOW DOES CANCER START OR HOW DOES IT HAPPEN?
~Ideally, the bodies made up of a cell that grow, divide die out and are replaced by new cells> Sometimes, however, cells grow out of control and instead of dying, multiply to form a growth (tumors) in the body.
That is what causes cancer or tumor.

4. CAN I VACCINATE AGAINST CANCER?
~There is no vaccine for cancer as at present. However, for some viruses that can cause cancer, e.g. HPV and Hepatitis B, there are vaccines against those.

5. IS CANCER CONTAGIOUS?
~Absolutely not! One cannot get cancer from someone who has it.

6. WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON GENDER-RELATED CANCERS?
~ In women, there are two types of common cancers.
a) Breast cancer.
b) Cervical cancer.

~In men, there are also two types of common cancers.
a) Prostate cancer.
b) Testicular cancer.

~However, there are many other types of cancers that exist.

7. IS CANCER CURABLE?
~In some instances, and especially the early stages of cancer, it can quite possibly be cured or managed.
~For the above mentioned types of cancers, Especially Breast, Cervical, Prostate and Testicular cancers, they can be treated and managed when detected early. That is where cancer screening comes in.

9. HOW IMPORTANT IS CANCER SCREENING? ~For cancers such as breast, cervical, prostate and testicular cancers which are the most common gender-related cancers, it is advisable to screen regularly in order to detect and manage them in treatment. ~Make sure to visit your doctor for screening for early detection and management, for better outcome and higher survival rate.

10. ARE THERE ANY PREVENTIVE MEASURES AGAINST CANCER?
~Sometimes cancer can be hereditary, and in such cases, there is not much that can be done to prevent it.
~However, you can make some few lifestyle changes to lessen/reduce the risk factors of cancer:
a) Eat right: Make sure your nutrition is right and healthy. If possible, visit a nutritionist to figure out what healthy foods you can incorporate in your lifestyle.

b) Exercise: Whether it is the gym, swimming, walking, jogging, etc, incorporate a regular movement routine into your life.

c) Screening: Get regularly checked by your doctor to ensure that you are healthy, and if otherwise, to manage the disease early enough.

Finally, Besties;
Remember that early screening is what might just save your life. You only get one Body, take care of it selfishly!

DEMISTIFYING UTI(URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS)

You know those times when your ge****ls are more or less killing you, from itching and pain? Some blood in the p*e, there is some burning sensation when you go to the washroom? And especially after you've had s*x in in your mind, you're panicking; I need to get tested! Did I get infected? Well... it could also be a UTI. You know, UTIs and STIs have almost similar signs and symptoms, and could easily be confused.
So today, let's analyze UTIs or Urinary Tract Infections.

WHAT'S A UTI?:
Urinary Tract Infection is an infection of any part of the urinary system. The Urinary Tract system consists of the Urethra, the bladder, the Ureters and Kidneys.
It happens both to men and women, but UTIs are mostly related with women.

SO, WHAT CAUSES A UTI?
UTIs happen when bacteria, fungi, or virus get into your urethra, bladder, or kidney (usually starting from the urethra) and cause an infection.

They can be caused by:
1. Wiping the wrong way

2. Wearing dump, wet or dirty underwear that may get bacteria into your ge****ls.

3. Sexual Activities.

RISK FACTORS.
Now women have a higher chance of getting UTI than men. What increases the risk of getting a UTI in women?

1. Female anatomy: Shorter urethra in women shortens the distance that the bacteria travels to reach the bladder.

2. Sexual activity: Sexually active women are at a higher risk of getting UTI.
.New or multiple s*xual partners also increases that risk. The s*xual in*******se helps to push the bacteria further into the urethra.

3. Use of public Toilets: Contamination from Public toilets is a huge risk factor for UTI.

4. Menopause: After menopause, estrogen circulation declines, causing a change in the Urinary Tract. which makes women at menopause more vulnerable to these infections.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF UTI:
1. An urgent feeling of needing to urinate, even when you're not actually pressed.

2. Burning sensation when p*eing or urinating.

3. Cloudy urine.

4. Pelvic pain in women.

5. Presence of blood in the urine.

6. Increased times of urinating. (frequently p*eing than usual)

PREVENTION:
How can you prevent, you know getting a UTI and avoiding all that annoying pain and discomfort?
1. P*e before and after s*x.

2. Stay hydrated to help rid the urinary tract of bacteria.

3. Make sure to wipe correctly after using the toilets. (Front to Back).

4. Limit as much as possible use of Public restrooms. And do not, under any circumstance, sit on those Public toilets seats.

5. Avoid using soap and other feminine hygiene products to clean inside your va**na. Use just water, and eat healthy, otherwise it is self cleansing.

TREATMENT:
Most UTIs are treatable using antibiotics. Make sure to visit your doctor as soon as you get any of these symptoms for a more specific treatment description.

FINALLY;
UTIs are very common, and usually harmless, but if they remain untreated, they might spread to the kidneys, hence causing more harm. Get checked, stay healthy!

MISCARRIAGE; THE STIGMA, DOs and DON'T S, SEEKING TREATMENT.

It is a rosy deal when a woman gets pregnant. Baby showers, ultrasounds, picking names, shopping for the baby, baby bump photos. We can already envision holding the baby; hearing their first cry. Oh! such joy!

However, no one tells an expectant mom that one in four pregnancies does not end in a live birth. It could be a still Birth or a miscarriage. No one tells an expectant woman that it is okay if they miscarry- it is not their fault. Even worse, no one tells an expectant mother that should they miscarry, it is not shameful to seek medical treatment or what to do in that instance. Information about miscarriage is Rare, therefore a woman might be caught off guard, feeling devastated and helpless should they go through a miscarriage. But, that journey doesn't have to be as hard, if you have this information.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF A MISCARRIAGE

The most obvious signs of a miscarriage are;
1. Heavy bleeding or spotting during the pregnancy, accompanied by
2. abdominal or Back pains
3. Cramping.
If you experience any of these symptoms, it is advisable to check in with your doctor right away.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A MISCARRIAGE

1. Your doctor will confirm the miscarriage through an ultrasound and might perform a pelvic exam to check your cervix.

2. Emptying the uterus. Once a miscarriage is confirmed, your uterus will need to be cleaned or emptied for your normal cycle to resume. Sometimes a miscarriage may be complete on its own, meaning that all the fetal tissue has been already cleaned out of the uterus. If a pregnancy is in advanced stages, parts of the pregnancy may remain in the uterus (what is commonly known as Incomplete Miscarriage), and has to be physically cleaned out. Your doctor will advise you on the best method to do that. In both instances, however, it is advisable to check in with your doctor.

WHAT NOT TO DO AFTER A MISCARRIAGE.

It is recommended that you do not insert anything in your va**na (Avoid s*x, tampons, menstruation cups) for at least two weeks to avoid infections.

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR AFTER A MISCARRIAGE.

If you keep bleeding for more than seven days, (one week) after the miscarriage, this may indicate that there could still be a placental tissue in the uterus or you have developed an infection. Please visit your doctor to seek medical advice.

FINALLY;

The grief you're feeling during this time is real justified, and will take time to subside. You may feel a rage of emotions; sad, angry, resentful, even. You may cry a lot, or not cry at all. Feel your emotions and do not be ashamed of them. Heal at your pace.
You might also consider going to therapy to help you through this difficult period.
Try to remind yourself that you can and most likely will become pregnant again and give birth to a healthy baby.

WHAT IS SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION IN MALES?

Sexual dysfunction is any physical or psychological problem that prevents you or your partner from getting s*xual satisfaction. Male s*xual dysfunction is a common health problem affecting men of all ages, but is more common with increasing age.

The main types of male s*xual dysfunction are:

1. Erectile dysfunction (difficulty getting/keeping an er****on).

2. Premature ej*******on (reaching or**sm too quickly).

3. Delayed or inhibited ej*******on (reaching or**sm too slowly or not at all).

4. Low libido (reduced interest in s*x).

SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES

Physical causes of s*xual dysfunction may be:

1. Low testosterone levels.

2. Prescription drugs

3. Blood vessel disorders such as atherosclerosis(hardening of the arteries) and high blood pressure.

4. Stroke or nerve damage from diabetes or surgery.

5. Smoking.

6. Alcoholism and drug abuse.

7. Psychological causes might include:

8. Concern about s*xual performance.

9. Marital or relationship problems.

10. Depression, feelings of guilt.

11.Effects of past s*xual trauma.

12. Work-related stress and anxiety.

HOW DOES SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION AFFECT MEN?

The most common problems men face with s*xual dysfunction are troubles with ej*******on, getting and keeping an er****on, and reduced s*xual desire.

Problems with ej*******on are:

~Premature ej*******on (PE): Ej*******on that occurs before or too soon after pe*******on.

~Inhibited or delayed ej*******on: Ej*******on does not happen or takes a very long time.

~Retrograde ej*******on: At or**sm, the ej*****te is forced back into the bladder rather than through the end of the p***s.

~The exact cause of premature ej*******on (PE) is not known. While in many cases PE is due to performance anxiety during s*x, other factors may be:

~Stress.

~Temporary depression.

~History of s*xual repression.

~Low self-confidence.

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

How is male s*xual dysfunction diagnosed?

Your doctor may begin the diagnosis process with a physical exam. Physical tests may include:

Blood tests to check your testosterone levels, blood sugar (for diabetes) and cholesterol.

Blood pressure check.

Re**al exam to check your prostate.

Examination of your p***s and testicles.
