Why should you use a menstrual cup instead of a tampon? See the key facts below!⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Tampons can cause TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome) resulting from toxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus (staph) bacteria which can come from open wounds or the use of superabsorbent tampons ⠀⠀⠀⠀
- The rough texture of tampons can lead to small scrapes in the skin that allow bacteria to enter your body.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Tampons absorb your natural moisture, leaving you dry and uncomfortable.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Tampons and pads lead to massive amounts of waste (unrecyclable).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Both Pads and Tampons contain harmful chemicals that absorb into your bloodstream through the thin and delicate tissues of your va**nal wall.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Menstrual cups are clean, reusable, safe, easy to sanitize, and completely free of harmful chemicals.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Does it hurt when using a menstrual cup?

Menstrual cups are made of silicone which are flexible and therefore inserting it in does not hurt.

As a beginner, even if it easy to insert the cup into the va**na, removal can be complex, especially initially. Try to relax, and use Kegel muscles to push it down the va**nal canal, until you get a grip of the tip with your fingers.

How often should you wash your cup?

It's important to wash your menstrual cup at least twice a day during your cycle (every 12 hours), and ideally every 4-8 hours. After removing your cup and emptying the contents, simply wash the cup under cold or warm water and then re-insert. You can use the collapsible cup by placing the menstrual cup inside and adding boiling water. Let is sit for about 10 minutes before re-using.

WHAT'S HAPPENING: The luteal phase occurs after ovulation (when your ovaries release an egg) and before your period starts. During this time, the lining of your uterus normally gets thicker to prepare for a possible pregnancy.

MOOD: You may find that your mood shifts from mellow to irritable in a heartbeat. That's because your Estrogen levels plunge leading to a decrease in the brain's level of serotonin and increases chemicals that govern your body's stress response.

TRY THIS: Load up on self-care routines, exercise, enjoy complex carbohydrates and choose high-quality supplements that help regulate the symptoms.

HOW DOES IT WORK? This has to be the most common question I get every time I start talking about the Mēnsī. The first time I used a cup (a little over 4 years ago); I was also very sceptical and found it quite daunting honestly. I also hadn't heard much about them nor done much research but once I read about the positive effects of using a cup, I was convinced right away. So here's a graphic on how the cup works.

Menopause usually signifies the end of a woman's period and happens anywhere between the age of 45 and 55. When we hear the word menopause, it is never from a positive lens. There are endless horror stories of those terrible side effects including night sweats and hot flushes. However, this can be a time of liberation and positivity for women - a time of positive change, new beginnings and a new sense of freedom. As we celebrate this year's World Menopause Day, let us all remember to be sensitve to anyone around who may be going through this next phase of their life, and be as supportive as possible by reading about the common side effects, anticipating negative emotions, communicating and practicing empathy.
