STEM CELLS are cells with the potential to evolve into many different types of cells in our body. They act as a repair system for the body.
There are 2 main types of stem cells: embryonal stem cells and adult stem cells.
*What are the important uses for stem cells?
Potential use of stem cells grow new cells in a laboratory to replace damaged organs or tissue correcting parts of organs that do not work properly. Research on causes of genetic defects in cells. Research on how diseases arise or why certain cells develop into cancer cells. Testing new drugs for safety and effectiveness.
*What is the main function of stem cells in adults?
Adult stem cells are involved in regenerating tissue for regeneration and injury repair.
Findings: Adult stem cells have been isolated from adult tissue, umbilical cord blood and other non-embryonic sources, and can be transformed into many tissue and cell types in response to pathophysiological stimuli.
*Where do we find stem cells?
Stem cells are pretty much ubiquitous in the body and present in many different organs and tissues, including brain, blood, bone marrow, muscle, skin, heart and liver tissue. In these areas, they are dormant until they are needed to regenerate lost or injured tissue.
*Can stem cells cure anything?
Sometimes called the body's "master cells", stem cells are the cells that develop into blood, brain, bones and all organs of the body. They have the potential to repair, restore, replace, and regenerate cells, and could possibly be used to treat many medical conditions and diseases.
