🌍 World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2025
📅 18 – 24 November 2025
Theme: “Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future.”

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is not a distant threat — it’s happening now. At KACP, we join the global community in raising awareness on the urgent need to safeguard the power of antimicrobials through responsible use, innovation, and collaboration.

🔬 AMR threatens our ability to treat infections, perform surgeries safely, and manage complex health conditions.
But with collective action — in laboratories, hospitals, farms, and communities — we can curb its impact.

Let’s act together:
✅ Strengthen diagnostics and laboratory capacity
✅ Promote antimicrobial stewardship and awareness
✅ Build policies that secure sustainable health for all

Together, we can protect our present and secure our future. 💙

🌍 International Pathology Day 2025
Theme: “The Global Pathology Workforce”

Today, we shine a light on the heroes behind every diagnosis — the pathologists. 💙

In Kenya, fewer than 200 pathologists serve a population of over 50 million people — a staggering ratio that highlights the urgent need to strengthen our pathology workforce. Each pathologist plays a critical role in patient care, ensuring that every test result, every biopsy, and every diagnosis tells the truth that guides life-saving decisions.

This shortage impacts patient outcomes, delays treatment, and places immense pressure on an already overstretched healthcare system. Yet, despite these challenges, pathologists continue to serve with dedication, precision, and quiet excellence.

As we mark , we call for:
✅ Training more pathologists to meet the growing healthcare demand
✅ Mentorship for the next generation of laboratory professionals
✅ Investment in diagnostic infrastructure and collaboration across all sectors

To every pathologist — we see you, we celebrate you, and we thank you for your tireless work in advancing health for all. 🧬

KACP 2025: How African-Led Research is Shaping the Future of Global Cancer Care

An inspiring presentation at the conference by Dr. Frank Onyambu highlighted a bold and necessary initiative: the creation of an African Cancer Atlas.

The session revealed a startling fact: over 80% of the genetic data used worldwide for cancer research comes from people of European descent. This means that many "precision" cancer treatments are not actually designed for the unique genetic makeup of African populations.

The solution is being built right here. Through a collaborative network of hospitals and researchers across the continent, this project will map the genetics of thousands of African cancer patients. This invaluable data will help scientists discover new drug targets and create diagnostics that are truly effective for the people who need them.

This is a powerful step towards health equity, ensuring that African patients benefit fully from the latest medical advances and that the continent becomes a leader in global medical research.

KACP 2025: Advances in Personalized Cancer Treatment in Kenya

An enlightening session at the conference, presented by Dr. Allan Njau, provided a hopeful update on how cancer care is becoming more personalized and effective in Kenya.

The discussion focused on "biomarker testing"—advanced diagnostic tests that look for specific genetic changes in a patient's cancer. These tests allow doctors to select treatments that target the cancer's specific weaknesses, leading to better results.

Key takeaways:

Faster Diagnosis for Lung Cancer: Through strategic partnerships, the turnaround time for essential genetic testing in lung cancer has been significantly reduced.

New Options for Breast and Ovarian Cancer: Testing for the BRCA genes is now available, helping to identify patients who will benefit greatly from a specific class of targeted drugs.

A Collaborative Effort: The success of this advanced care relies on a team effort between surgeons, pathologists, and oncologists, all working together from the very first biopsy.

This progress ensures that Kenyan patients have access to the same sophisticated diagnostic approaches used globally, right here at home.

KACP 2025: Kenyan Innovation Brings Specialized Cancer Diagnosis Closer to Home

A truly inspiring presentation by Dr. Job Mwale Magare at the 17th KACP Annual Scientific conference 2025 showcased a homegrown solution to a major challenge in our healthcare system: the long wait times and limited access to cancer diagnosis outside major cities.

A team from Meru University of Science and Technology, Meru Teaching Hospital, and other partners has successfully developed and tested a low-cost digital pathology system. Using a specially designed, 3D-printed microscope, they can digitize tissue samples from patients. These digital slides can then be shared securely with pathologists in other locations for a remote opinion, and are even analyzed by an Artificial Intelligence (AI) program to assist in the process.

This "telepathology" system has the potential to revolutionize cancer care in Kenya by reducing diagnostic delays and ensuring that expertise reaches every county. It's a powerful example of how local innovation, combining appropriate technology and smart partnerships, can create a tangible impact on public health.

KACP 2025: Ensuring Accuracy in Cancer Diagnosis – A Pathologist's Perspective

In a breakout session on Precision Medicine, Dr. Ancent Nzioka from KUTRRH shed light on the critical efforts behind the scenes to ensure every patient receives an accurate and timely diagnosis.

His presentation, "Minimizing Diagnostic Errors in Anatomic Pathology," explained that the journey of a tissue sample from the patient to the pathologist's report is a complex process with many steps. Errors at any point—from the surgeon selecting the right biopsy site, to preserving the sample correctly, to the doctor interpreting the final report—can impact patient care.

Dr. Nzioka emphasized that Kenyan pathologists are actively implementing international best practices, including standardized protocols and teamwork with clinicians, to safeguard the quality of diagnoses. This work is the unsung foundation of personalized cancer treatment, ensuring that the therapy a patient receives is precisely tailored to their specific disease.
