Peptic ulcers are deep erosions in the lining of the stomach or duodenum that lead to inflammation in the gastric or duodenal wall.
With gastric ulcers, epigastric pain worsens when eating a meal because of the hydrochloric acid thatâs produced in response to food.
With duodenal ulcers, epigastric pain is relieved while eating a meal, but it typically recurs 2 to 5 hours later or it can appear at night.
Nutrition Management of peptic ulcers:
1. Complex carbohydrates:
Complex carbohydrates reduce inflammation in gastric linings by absorption of excessive acid. They also provide stool bulk, reduce transit time in large intestine and make f***l elimination easier and quicker.
2. Lean protein:
Lean proteins fasten the healing process. They are easy to digest as compared to high protein and reduce acid reflux. They also provide necessary micronutrients.
3. Fats:
Swap saturated fats with PUFAs and MUFAS. They have anti-inflammatory effects. They are tolerable by GI tract. They are also immunity boosters.
4. Vitamins and minerals: They help to reduce bacterial growth. Probiotics should also be added in diet.
