NEMA issued a directive on asbestos management to the Ministries
Departments and Agencies (MDAs) on 15th November 2016 requiring removal, handling and disposal of worn out asbestos. On August 24th, 2024 The Cabinet secretary of Environment Hon Aden Duale ordered NEMA to map out country wide both public and private institutions with asbestos roofing and
ensure they are removed and disposed in line with NEMA Guidelines.

According to the Legal Notice No. 121 of the Environmental Management and Coordination (Waste Management) Regulations 2006 of Kenya, waste containing asbestos is classified as hazardous waste. In addition, the Legal Notice requires that hazardous waste be disposed in a specified manner as approved by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
