5 Tips for Navigating the Holidays While Pregnant
1. Strike a healthy balance in your diet
Eating a healthy diet is important for everyone, but itâs essential for pregnant women. Itâs tempting to indulge during the holidays, but overeating and eating foods that you donât usually consume can leave you feeling sick if youâre pregnant.
Instead, eat a nutritious balanced diet most of the time, but donât be afraid to indulge here and there. Thereâs no need to deprive yourself of your favorite holiday treats, as long as you enjoy them in moderation.
Remember that there are some foods you should avoid if youâre pregnant, including fermented cheese, sushi, and raw fish.
2. Opt for âmocktailsâ
While friends and family might be enjoying beers, spirits, mulled wine, and champagne, itâs easy to feel like youâre missing out if youâre pregnant over the holidays. You shouldnât drink alcohol while youâre pregnant, but that doesnât mean you have to skip all of the holiday toasts.
There are plenty of non-alcoholic drinks to enjoy this year. Sparkling grape juice, mulled cider, and non-alcoholic eggnog are all festive options that are safe for moms-to-be.
3. Ask loved ones for help
Purchasing gifts, wrapping presents, decorating, attending parties, and more can make your holiday to-do list feel like itâs a mile long. Pregnancy can sap your energy level, so ask friends or family for help this season.
Consider purchasing your gifts online, or bring a friend or family member with you when you go shopping. Having someone else there to carry items or stand in line when you need a break can make a big difference.
4. Plan ahead if youâre traveling
Traveling while youâre pregnant is generally safe, particularly if your pregnancy isnât high risk. However, itâs still a good idea to plan ahead if youâre taking a trip this holiday season.
Make sure youâre traveling with your latest prenatal records and your doctorâs contact information. Most women can fly until around week 36 of pregnancy, but if youâre even closer to your due date, you shouldnât fly or travel far from home.
5. Make time for yourself
The holidays are busy, and itâs easy to get swept up in the moment. If youâre pregnant this holiday season, be sure to slow down and make time for yourself.
Now is your time to enjoy a little self-indulgence before your baby arrives. Prioritize sleep, take naps, and spend quality time with your partner and your family before you welcome your little one.
