Kenya National Commision on Human Rights Our Mandate is to act as a watch dog over the government in the are of human rights and provide leadership in moving the country towards a human rights state.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) is an autonomous National Human Rights Institution first established by a Kenyan Act of Parliament in 2002. KNCHR became operational in July 2003. Following the promulgation of the new Constitution of Kenya on August 27, 2010, and the passing of the KNCHR Act 2011, the Commission was transformed into a constitutional body. Our Vision

KNCHR Chairperson Ms. Claris Ogangah led the Commission before the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) of the National Assembly, chaired by Hon. George Murugara (2nd frame), to present the Commission’s FY 2026/27 priority areas. Adequate funding is essential for KNCHR to effectively discharge its constitutional mandate to promote and protect human rights in Kenya. The deliberations with JLAC were productive, with members offering strong backing to KNCHR’s mandate. Parliamentary support is key to ensuring the Commission is properly resourced to safeguard the rights and dignity of all Kenyans.

KNCHR conducted a Business and Human Rights Training of Trainers (ToT) for Commissioners and staff to strengthen internal capacity to integrate business and human rights across the Commission’s work.

The program equipped participants with practical facilitation skills and tools to design and deliver impactful training aligned with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and Kenya’s National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights. This is crucial for enhancing KNCHR’s ability to effectively fulfil its mandate to promote, protect and monitor human rights in contexts where business activities impact communities.

KNCHR led by Chairperson Ms. Claris Ogangah today hosted Ogiek Community members, Ogiek People's Development Programme, American Jewish World Service, and Katiba Institute for a consultative meeting. The meeting discussed strategies to accelerate enjoyment of human rights by Indigeneous People in Kenya, implementation of the Judgment of the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights in the Ogiek of Mau case, and recent evictions from among others Sasimwani area in Narok North, Olorkuto Sub County.

KNCHR hosted the Kenya Stakeholders’ Coalition on the Universal Periodic Review ( ), convened by the East African Centre for Human Rights, for a courtesy call and engagement meeting.

The discussions focused on Kenya’s 4th Cycle UPR, strengthening accountability for recommendations on Women’s Rights, SRHR, Health and Child Rights and enhancing collaboration between KNCHR and civil society actors.

KNCHR today hosted the for a courtesy call at its Nairobi offices, with discussions focusing on strengthening collaboration to champion the rights of all people in Kenya.
Key issues included civil and political rights ahead of next year’s general election, safeguarding civic space, enhancing protection of human rights defenders, digital security, leveraging technology and AI for human rights, proper documentation of violations, and the crucial role of youth in these conversations.

The meeting was led by KNCHR Chairperson, Ms. , and attended by Commissioners and staff. The Defenders Coalition delegation was led by its Executive Director, Mr. D.Kamau, who reaffirmed the Coalition’s commitment to continued collaboration with KNCHR in promoting and protecting human rights in the country.

Today, KNCHR officially welcomed a delegation from the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) for a peer-learning and technical exchange visit.

Over the next few days, our discussions will focus on human rights–based election monitoring, early warning and rapid response mechanisms, complaints handling and follow-up, detention monitoring, business and human rights, and enforcement of remedies.

This engagement strengthens regional collaboration among National Human Rights Institutions and reinforces our shared commitment to promoting accountability, preparedness, and a Human Rights–Based Approach in governance.

KNCHR Chairperson Ms. Claris Ogangah today reaffirmed that the right to peaceful assembly is a constitutional entitlement; not a privilege granted by the State.

Speaking on accountability and public order management, she emphasized that security and human rights are not competing interests, but mutually reinforcing obligations; especially as Kenya approaches an electoral period.
