Kenya National Commision on Human Rights Our Mandate is to act as a watch dog over the government in the are of human rights and provide leadership in moving the country towards a human rights state.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) is an autonomous National Human Rights Institution first established by a Kenyan Act of Parliament in 2002. KNCHR became operational in July 2003. Following the promulgation of the new Constitution of Kenya on August 27, 2010, and the passing of the KNCHR Act 2011, the Commission was transformed into a constitutional body. Our Vision

KNCHR Chairperson Ms. Claris Ogangah (R) today hosted the Speaker of the Turkana County Assembly, Rt. Hon. Charles Lokioto Ewoi (middle) at the Commission’s offices in Nairobi. The meeting followed the Chairperson’s visit to Turkana last week, where the Commission identified key areas of collaboration with the County Assembly of Turkana aimed at enhancing the enjoyment of rights by both refugees and host communities.

As an entry point, KNCHR will work closely with the County Assembly of Turkana’s Committee on Justice, Legal Affairs, Human Rights and Refugee Affairs, laying the foundation for a broader and sustained partnership.

Today KNCHR hosted a delegation from the Uganda Human Rights Commission ( ) for a technical exchange on strengthening systems and structures to address human rights violations. KNCHR’s team was led by Commissioners Dr. Dennis Wamalwa (middle) & Hon. Sarah Bonaya (3R) while the UHRC delegation was led by Commissioner Crispin Kaheru (4R).

The discussions focused on cross border abuses, human rights–based electoral processes, complaints handling and investigations, use of technology, intersex persons’ rights, data driven decision making and continuous public awareness. The two institutions reaffirmed their shared responsibility to protect and promote human rights in both countries.

KNCHR Commissioner Prof. Marion Mutugi, EBS, was inaugurated as a member of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council at an official ceremony presided over by Cabinet Secretary Hon.

Chaired by Prof. Frederick Were, the Council brings together a diverse team of professionals, with KNCHR'S Prof. M.Mutugi’s appointment strengthening the integration of human rights considerations in the regulation of Kenya’s medical and dental professions.

The inauguration follows appointments made on 27 March 2026 and marks the formal commencement of the Council’s mandate to strengthen regulation, uphold standards and enhance oversight in the health sector.

KNCHR Chairperson Ms. Claris Ogangah (2L) led a delegation to Kakuma and Kalobeyei under the Haki na Ushirikiano programme (with ) to assess refugee and host community conditions, review progress, and engage stakeholders, alongside Vice Chair Dr. Raymond Nyeris and technical staff(R).

The team met key actors including county leadership, UNHCR, Judiciary and DRS, visited reception centres, and held a Rightfully Speaking Town Hall, radio engagements and a media briefing, with active participation from refugees and host communities.

Key priorities identified were implementing the Shirika Plan, harmonising refugee laws, strengthening anti-trafficking efforts, expanding Alternative Justice Systems, improving psychosocial support and registration and deepening integration. KNCHR noted progress but stressed continued collaboration to advance rights and dignity for all.

Aloo- Obudho PhD. ,EBS (middle) engaging in discussions on areas of collaboration and strengthening human rights discourse among students. KNCHR led by Chairperson Ms. Claris Ogangah (6L), had a consultative meeting with the State Department for Justice, Human Rights & Constitutional Affairs, led by PS Hon. Judith Pareno (6R).

The discussions centered on pivotal policy and legislative developments aimed at safeguarding the rights of all Kenyans:

- Business & Human Rights: Reviewing the National Action Plan (NAP) to ensure ethical corporate conduct and accountability.

- Equality & Inclusion: Tracking the legislative progress of the Intersex Bill to secure legal recognition and dignity for intersex persons.

- Protecting Defenders: Advancing the National Human Rights Defenders Policy to provide a safe operating environment for advocates of justice.

- Global Compliance: Implementing recommendations from International Human Rights Mechanisms, including the 4th Cycle of the UPR.

- Justice for Victims: Finalizing the National Reparations Framework, Policy, and Guidelines to provide effective redress for human rights violations.
