Today, Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital had the privilege of hosting inspiring mental health advocate and endurance cyclist Ben Haggai, who is currently midway through his remarkable cycling journey that began in Mombasa. Officially flagged off by Dr. Salma Swaleh, County Director of Public Health and Disease Prevention in Mombasa County, Ben set out to cycle across 12 counties to raise awareness about Postpartum Depression (PPD), a serious yet often silent condition affecting many new mothers in Kenya.

His journey is more than a physical challenge,it is a powerful call to action aimed at breaking stigma, encouraging open conversations around maternal mental health, and promoting early screening and support for mothers. Through this initiative, Ben is helping communities understand that postpartum depression is real, treatable, and that mothers facing it deserve compassion, support, and timely care.

During his visit, Ben was warmly received by the hospital’s CEO and senior consultant psychiatrists, who held meaningful discussions on maternal mental health challenges and the importance of strengthening community awareness and care systems. We commend Ben for his unwavering commitment and courage on this journey,he has not yet completed his ride, and every kilometer he covers amplifies voices that too often go unheard. We wish him continued safety, resilience, and favorable winds as he presses onward. We stand ready to collaborate further with dedicated champions like Ben to foster greater understanding, reduce barriers, and ensure no mother feels isolated in her struggle.
