MUAC (Mid-Upper Arm Measurement)
WHAT IS MUAC?
MUAC means measuring the middle part of the upper arm — it is used to check the nutrition status of children under 5 years old.
HOW TO INTERPRET MUAC RESULTS:
1- RED:
(less than 11.5 cm): Severe malnutrition (SAM) — Needs urgent medical care.
2- YELLOW:
(11.5 – 12.4 cm): Moderate malnutrition — Needs care and nutritious food.
3- GREEN:
(12.5 cm and above): Healthy — No malnutrition.
MUAC IS EASY TO USE:
1. it is done in less than 1 minute
2. It helps identify children who need urgent care
3. Use the MUAC tape gently and place it at the middle of the child’s upper arm
ADVICE:
MUAC should be used regularly to check and prevent malnutrition in young children.
