Are We Nurses or Detectives? Navigating the Gray Areas of Pain.
In this Edition: Pain is the 5th vital sign, but it’s the only one we can’t measure with a machine. This week, we are tackling the toughest part of our job: believing the patient when their behavior doesn't match our expectations.
I explore the disconnect between what we see and what the patient feels, backed by the "Gate Control Theory" and the dangers of the placebo myth. Using a personal "Tale of Two Patients," I discuss how implicit bias can cloud our judgment and offer practical advice on how to shift our focus from chasing a pain score number to achieving functional goals. It’s a reminder that we aren't judges—we are healers.
