Wrapping Up an Exciting Week at KAPH2025 Convention!

As the KAPH Convention, themed “Strengthening Partnerships for Universal Health Coverage,” wraps up today, KEMSA celebrates a week of meaningful partnerships and dynamic engagement with Kenya’s private health sector.

The convention showcased how KEMSA’s expanded partnership models with private hospitals are improving access to affordable, reliable and quality medical commodities.

Speaking on behalf of CEO Dr. Waqo Ejersa, Deputy Director, Subsidiary Services Department Christine Mathenge highlighted that public–private collaboration is now essential for a resilient, efficient and patient-centred health system.

Through bulk procurement and collaboration with innovative manufacturers, KEMSA is widening access to advanced NCD and oncology treatments, while addressing gaps in specialised medicines for referral and private hospitals.

During the exhibition at the convention, KEMSA had the opportunity to showcase its work and engage with various delegates from private hospitals.

This interaction not only fostered transparency, efficiency and shared value across the supply chain but also strengthened KEMSA’s partnerships within the private health sector.

The engagement highlighted KEMSA’s pivotal role in promoting a more inclusive and accessible health system for all Kenyans.

Health CS Aden Duale, today toured the KEMSA stand at the Kenya Association of Private Hospitals (KAPH) 4th Annual Convention in Nairobi, where he applauded the Authority’s rising Order Fill Rate, which has now climbed to 77%.

The convention, themed “Resilient Leadership and Sustainable Financing: Advancing Quality Healthcare in Kenya’s Private Sector,” brought together key players in the private health ecosystem to explore pathways for strengthening service delivery.

CS Duale urged KEMSA to “step on the gas” and push its Order Fill Rate to 100%, noting that improved efficiency is critical in ensuring consistent access to essential Health Products and Technologies nationwide.

KEMSA has in recent months expanded its footprint into the private hospital space as part of efforts to accelerate the delivery of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Now in its fourth year, the KAPH Annual Convention continues to serve as a platform for collaboration between the public and private sectors.

The CS underscored the vital role of private healthcare providers in advancing Kenya’s health agenda, emphasizing that UHC can only be achieved through strong, coordinated partnerships across the sector.

This Black November, KEMSA is upbeat and turning the volume all the way up as we move to delight our customers across the country.

In a strong collaboration with the Meru County Department of Health, KEMSA has rolled out an intensive five-day capacity-building program to supercharge the use of the Logistics Management Information System (LMIS) across health facilities in the county.

The team, led by KEMSA Deputy Director, Customer Service Jackline Mainye, paid a courtesy call to Meru County Ag. Chief Officer for Health Services, Dr. Koome Muthuri, ahead of the high-energy kickoff.

Across county and sub-county facilities, the LMIS trainings will streamline ordering processes, tighten accountability, and fast-track the delivery of essential medical supplies, ensuring Meru health facilities receive the reliability and excellence our customers deserve.

Dr. Koome applauded the partnership, affirming that LMIS is a transformative tool in guaranteeing uninterrupted access to essential medicines and elevating overall service delivery in Meru.

During the visit, he assessed the revamped Msambweni Hospital drug store, a KEMSA CSR project improving medicine management and supply reliability.

KEMSA CEO on Impact Tour of Revamped Mtwapa Drug Store as Reform Gains Ground
Under the warm Kilifi sun, where the hum of community life meets the call for better healthcare, KEMSA’s reform story unfolds with renewed purpose.

In Mtwapa, the heart of Kilifi’s bustling health network, KEMSA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Waqo Ejersa arrived with a team of senior officials on a mission beyond inspection, a journey to witness impact, affirm progress and strengthen partnership. His destination: the refurbished
Mtwapa Health Centre drug store, a once-humble facility now reborn through KEMSA’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

The visit, part of KEMSA’s ongoing county engagement campaign, marked another step in translating reform from policy papers into people’s lives, ensuring that every infrastructure investment speaks to efficiency, accountability and improved health outcomes.

The Mtwapa facility, officially opened by Governor Gideon Mung’aro in September 2023, now stands as a symbol of renewal and reliability. Renovated and equipped by KEMSA, the store has been transformed into a modern hub for safe, organized and timely distribution of essential Health Products and Technologies (HPTs).

Accompanied by Commercial Director Eliud Muriithi, Finance and Accounts Director Waiganjo Karanja, and the Coast Region Sales & Marketing team, Dr. Ejersa commended the quality of the refurbishment and its lasting value to the county health system.
“We are turning reforms into results,” he remarked. “This project shows how strategic partnerships with counties can move us closer to a future where no facility faces a stock-out and every Kenyan receives care when and where it’s needed.”

Since its completion, the Mtwapa store has enhanced the management and flow of medical commodities, improving reliability and access across facilities in the sub-county. The result: stronger inventory control, reduced wastage, and a seamless link in the county’s health supply chain, exactly the kind of transformation KEMSA’s reform agenda envisions.

Governor Gideon Mung’aro commended the initiative as a model of collaboration between national and county governments, noting that the success of health delivery lies in mutual accountability and shared goals.

“KEMSA’s partnership has brought real change to how we manage our health commodities,” said Governor Mung’aro. “We are committed to sustaining this progress through timely payments, efficient systems and continuous collaboration. Together, we can ensure every health facility in Kilifi runs smoothly and reliably.”

As the tour concluded, the visit served as a vivid reminder that reform is not just about restructuring institutions, it’s about restoring confidence, deepening partnerships and delivering visible value to communities. In Mtwapa, that promise is already taking shape.

KEMSA CEO Takes Reform Drive to Counties, Begins with Strategic Visit to Kilifi

The KEMSA Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Waqo Ejersa, has taken his reform agenda to the grassroots, starting with a strategic visit to Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro.

The visit marks the launch of a nationwide county engagement campaign aimed at strengthening partnerships, improving service delivery and ensuring timely access to essential Health Products and Technologies (HPTs).

“We are taking reforms from the boardroom to the field, listening to counties, acting fast, and ensuring that medical supplies reach every facility without delay,” said Dr. Ejersa.

Since taking office, Dr. Ejersa has driven sweeping institutional changes that have raised KEMSA’s Order Fill Rate from 39% to 67% in one year, with recent performance reaching 94.9% in Kilifi, 99% in Baringo and 98.5% in Makueni.

He noted that financial reforms and partnerships, including one with KCB, have improved sustainability, while new procurement strategies have led to better pricing and lower costs, a key boost for the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda.
Governor Mung’aro praised KEMSA’s progress and pledged to continue clearing the county’s debt at KSh 50 million monthly.

Dr. Ejersa added that KEMSA’s reforms including E-locks, Electronic Proof of Delivery systems and AI-driven stock management, are building transparency, efficiency and trust.

“KEMSA’s transformation is not just structural but cultural,” he said.
The Kilifi visit sets the pace for a nationwide outreach to anchor KEMSA’s reform journey at the county level.
