Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease that affects the central nervous system, which includes the brain and spinal cord. Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease where the immune system reacts against components of the nervous system. AUB MC Multiple Sclerosis Center (MSC) was inaugurated on the 4th of October, 2011, and it is the first in Lebanon, Middle East and North Africa.

We are thrilled to share that our recent article titled “Exosomal pHERV-W ENV as a dynamic biomarker for relapse prediction and prognosis in multiple sclerosis “ has just been published in the Journal of Neuroinflammation.

In this study, our research team report that exosomal pHERV-W ENV expression is elevated during active MS and correlates with EBV activity (LMP2A expression), which may reflect coordinated immune activation. Notably, high baseline exosomal pHERV-W ENV levels were associated with greater long-term disease activity and earlier loss of NEDA status. This highlights the potential of exosomal pHERV-W ENV as a non-invasive biomarker with prognostic value in MS.
