After a week of poor Air quality the previous week (9-16 Nov), AQ has improved this week (17-23 November, 2025). Last week polluted air was transported from the northern parts of the Indian peninsula and travelled across the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal to Sri Lanka at times.

In contrast, from 17-23 November, winds coming from the northeast helped clear polluted air by the beginning of the week. Although some polluted air entered Sri Lanka again in the middle of the last week, AQI levels remained improved compared to the previous week across the country.

During the week, overall air quality across Sri Lanka ranged from "Good" to "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups". On 20 November, the AQI in Chilaw rose to 106, placing it in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups category. Mirihana (Cleanco) reported the highest AQI of the week at 67, while Ambalantota recorded the lowest value at 30, indicating the cleanest air during this period. Most locations recorded Good to Moderate conditions, indicating generally favourable air quality.

On 10 November, all monitored areas recorded daily AQI values above 100. On 11, 14, and 15 November, several locations recorded Unhealthy daily AQI levels. The polluted wind flowing over the Arabian Sea from parts of northern India contributed to these poor air quality conditions.

During the week, overall air quality across Sri Lanka ranged from Good to Unhealthy. Most locations experienced Moderate to Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups conditions, indicating generally poor air quality with occasional increases in particulate matter to unhealthy levels in some areas.

Battaramulla (Pelawatte) recorded the highest AQI of the week (136), indicating the poorest air quality, while Ambalantota reported the lowest AQI (77), reflecting the cleanest air during this period.

Summary for 3 – 9 November 2025:

On November 9, 2025, Air Quality across Sri Lanka reached unhealthy levels (AQI above 150). Such levels used to be rare, however, with the AQI in Northern India reaching 400 in New Delhi at present. When the wind circulation transports polluted air from the polluted Northern Indian continent to Sri Lanka. The locations recording the poorest air quality were in Provinces: northwest, western, central, northern and eastern.

From November 8–9, several locations again recorded Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups and Unhealthy daily AQI levels, particularly in Digana (121), Battaramulla (103), and Jaffna (104).

During 3–9 November 2025, air quality across Sri Lanka ranged from Good to Unhealthy levels, with daily AQI values varying between 48 and 159. Compared to the previous week, when Unhealthy conditions were mainly concentrated along the Western coastal belt from Colombo and Battaramulla to Chilaw, this week showed relatively improved conditions across most areas.

Weekly Air Quality Index (AQI) levels:

Moderate (AQI 51–100): Akurana, Kurunegala, Colombo-7, Mirihana, Battaramulla, Ambalangoda, Ambalantota, Puttalam, Trincomalee, Anuradhapura

Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (AQI 101–150): Digana, Chilaw, Jaffna

On 31 October and 1 November 2025, the Western Coastal region (Colombo, Battaramulla to Chilaw) recorded Unhealthy daily AQI levels exceeding 150. The AQI was high on 30 November and 2nd November as well as unhealthy for the vulnerable. The regions in the Western hillslopes including Kandy (Digana and Akurana) and the region of a*o reached Unhealthy air quality. Other locations experienced moderate air quality with occasional increases in particulate matter concentrations; air quality across Sri Lanka ranged from “Moderate” to “Unhealthy.”

Regional Wind Transport and Cyclonic Storms

During this period, air pollution was extreme in the Northern Indian Indo-Gangetic Plains downstream of the the Himalayas with AQI exceeding 300. This extreme air pollution was transported to Sri Lanka due to the wind circulation modulation due to the storm in the Arabian sea around 28-31 October. There was a complex interaction of the Arabian sea storm and Cyclone Montha in the Bay of Bengal which may eventually help to bring in cleaner air.

During this week, winds came from the Arabian Sea, carried dust and pollutants through Sri Lanka, causing moderate air pollution across most parts of Sri Lanka. Western coastal stations showed relatively lower pollution, while central and northern regions recorded slightly higher AQI values due to local sources. The highest AQI of 77 was recorded in Akurana, while the lowest AQI of 23 was observed in Nuwara Eliya.

Sri Lanka’s dry period of Jun–mid-Sep is causing water stress in 2025 for humans, flora, and wildlife. Cumulative Rainfall remained well below average at the start of Sept, with a national mean of 1.1 mm/day and a peak of 35.7 mm on 27th August. Rainfall is predicted to be below sea*onal for next couple of weeks. Even though Oct-Dec is a wet sea*on – a drop in rainfall is predicted. With the surrounding Indian Ocean warmer, this was reflected in the Land temperatures as well. Westerly winds of 8–15 m/s prevailed last week and are expected to continue.
