Padmasambhava ("Born from a Lotus"),[note 2] also known as Guru Rinpoche (Precious Guru) and the Lotus Born from Oḍḍiyāna, was a semi-legendary[1] tantric Buddhist Vajra master from India who revealed the Vajrayana in Tibet, circa 8th – 9th centuries.[2][3][4][5] According to early Tibetan sources including the Testament of Ba, he was invited to Tibet by King Trisong Detsen in the 8th century and designed Samye Monastery, the first Buddhist monastery in Tibet.[3][4] He became the Vajrayana master of the King and Twenty-Five special students as the Kangyur and Tangyur of the Buddha's teachings were translated into Tibetan.[3][6] Numerous biographies of Padmasambhava were written by his student Yeshe Tsogyal.[3][7][8][9]

The Potala Palace, winter palace of the Dalai Lama since the 7th century, symbolizes Tibetan Buddhism and its central role in the traditional administration of Tibet. The complex, comprising the White and Red Palaces with their ancillary buildings, is built on Red Mountain in the centre of Lhasa Valley, at an altitude of 3,700m. Also founded in the 7th century, the Jokhang Temple Monastery is an exceptional Buddhist religious complex. Norbulingka, the Dalai Lama's former summer palace, constructed in the 18th century, is a masterpiece of Tibetan art. The beauty and originality of the architecture of these three sites, their rich ornamentation and harmonious integration in a striking landscape, add to their historic and religious interest.

Drepung Monastery was founded in 1416 by Jamyang Choge Tashi Palden (1397–1449), one of Tsongkhapa's main disciple. It is the largest monastery built ever in tebet . Avale to accommodate over 10000 monks
