Rehabilitation is not only about treatment, it is about rebuilding daily life, confidence and independence.

At the Step Down Unit, participants take part in different activities that help them develop skills for independent living and community reintegration.

Activities may include gardening, cooking, cleaning, crafts, group activities and life skills training.

These activities help participants build routine, responsibility, confidence and social skills.

Step by step, rehabilitation helps people prepare to return to their families and communities.

What is the Step Down Unit Program?

The Step Down Unit Program at St. Benedict Menni Mental Rehabilitation Centre supports people with mental health conditions in their rehabilitation process.

The program helps participants develop daily living skills, confidence and independence so they can return to their families and communities.

Rehabilitation includes activities such as gardening, cooking, cleaning, group activities, life skills training and occupational therapy.

Our goal is to support recovery, dignity, independence and community reintegration.

Mothers are expected to be strong.

To cope.
To give.
To hold everything together.

But who listens to them?

In Liberia, many mothers carry the silent weight of anxiety, exhaustion and emotional pressure.

Through community spaces, we create something simple but powerful:
a place where they can speak, be heard and feel understood.

Because struggling does not mean failing.

And being heard can be the first step towards healing.

A better future starts with education.

Through our Scholarship Programme, children and young people are given the opportunity to learn, grow and build a new path.

Because care also means investing in what comes next.

Liberia is a country full of strength.

But its recent history has left deep challenges.

Years of conflict and crisis have impacted access to healthcare, especially mental health support.

For many women, this means facing stigma, exclusion and lack of care.

This is why We Are Like You exists.

Because where care is limited, it becomes even more essential.

Real change takes more than one solution.

At We Are Like You, our programmes work together to support recovery from every angle.

Mental health care.
Addiction treatment.
Education.
Empowerment.
Training.

Because rebuilding a life means addressing the whole person.

She was living on the streets.

Rejected.
Alone.
With no access to care.

At first, she didnโ€™t trust anyone.
Years of stigma and trauma had taught her to survive that way.

But everything changed with care.

Step by step, she received support, treatment and something even more important: dignity.

She was listened to.
Called by her name.
Included in her own recovery.

And eventuallyโ€ฆ she found her way back home.

Reunited with her family.
Rebuilding her life.

Because no one is beyond help.

In many communities, mental illness is still misunderstood.

It is often linked to curses, spirits or stigma.
And for many women, this means exclusion and silence.

In this video, we share the context we work in and how We Are Like You is helping change this reality.

Because with the right care, recovery is possible.

๐Ÿ’œ Watch the video:

In many parts of Africa, mental illness is still linked to curses, possession by evil spirits or witchcraft practices. Sufferers are often abandoned by their...
