"For importing Unknown and unlabelled medicines G2 pharmacy import license is suspended for time indefinite".
A recent investigation by the Liberia medicines and Health products Regulatory Authority ( LMHRA) has shed light on a damaging discovery involving G2 pharmacy.
According to reports, the independent hearing board of the LMHRA received and investigated a complaint on January 22, 2025, regarding a medication error that resulted in a fatality.
The issue revolves around the sales of Bupivancaine 0.5% an anesthesia medication, which was imported into Liberia and sold by G2 pharmacy.
Shockingly, the medication label was not in English, violating LMHRA regulation on packaging.
The Liberia Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Authority (LMHRA) is the statutory agency of the Government of Liberia responsible for ensuring that all medicines and health products circulating within the country are safe, effective, and of high quality. It was established in accordance with the National Drug Policy, which called for the creation of a regulatory authority to oversee the pharmaceutical sector, enforce medicine regulations, and establish a national quality control laboratory. The Authority was officially established on September 29, 2010.
The LMHRA's inspectorate and pharmacovigilance department took swift action, revoked their imposed license for time indefinite and imposed a fined of 500usd for each pack that was wrongfully lebel, multiply by 236 packs, this cumulated to 118,000 usd, but G2 pharmacy has paid only 1000usd.
This issue raises serious concerns about the safety and efficacy of medications being sold in Liberia and highlight the need for deeper investigation in G2 pharmacy and the need for stricter enforcement for Regulatory standards for pharmacy across Liberia.
According to information, these medications were distributed to catholic, CH. Rennie in Kakata and JFK and other government hospitals across Liberia.
