🔬 What exactly is precision medicine — and how is it different from “personalised” treatment?
As explained by Dr. Inese Čakstiņa-Dzērve, PhD, lead researcher of Institute of Microbiology and Virology and assisting professor of Faculty of Medicine at Rīgas Stradiņa universitāte (Riga Stradins University), scientific advisor at PMPC Center of Excellence, precision medicine goes beyond tailoring care to individual preferences. It integrates deep biological insight — from genes to proteins — to guide prevention and treatment strategies that are more accurate, timely, and effective.
🧬 While personalised treatment traditionally focused on age, gender, or lifestyle, precision medicine considers both phenotypic and genotypic variations, offering a more nuanced and evidence-based approach to care.
📌 There’s no global consensus on the exact definitions of “precision” vs “personalised” medicine — but at PMPC, we embrace a science-driven approach that empowers better outcomes for every child.
