Pregnancy brings big emotional changes and what you eat can genuinely support your mood, energy, and overall mental well-being💛
Nutrients like omega-3s, magnesium, iron, and B vitamins help regulate stress, balance hormones, and support healthy brain chemistry.
They’re not about perfection, just gentle, nourishing choices that help you feel more grounded through pregnancy and beyond.
Ask your midwife about simple, realistic ways to support your mental health through nutrition. 🌿

We had a wonderful morning at the Career Fest for St. Monica Birkirkara last thursday, joining other professionals to inspire the next generation! 🌸

We set up a stand showcasing several of the models used in our practice, which drew a lot of interest and sparked some great conversations!

The students showed such enthusiasm and curiosity about our midwifery course and profession, it was truly a pleasure meeting them. 👩‍🍼✨

‼️Content warning; realistic birth visuals.

Image 1: Cord still pulsating - blood continues flowing towards the baby.
Image 2: Cord now pale in colour - blood transferred to the baby.

Delayed Cord Clamping - what is it?
Delayed cord clamping means waiting 30 seconds to 3 minutes, or until the cord stops pulsating, before clamping and cutting the umbilical cord after birth instead of doing it immediately 👶.

The benefits that DCC offers include;
💫 Increased blood volume - Baby receives up to 30% more blood from the placenta, thus improving oxygen delivery.
💫 Higher iron stores - Helps prevent anemia in infancy.
💫 Better transition to life outside the womb - Supports heart and lung adaptation after birth.
💫 Boosted stem cells - Promotes development and tissue repair.
💫 Supports bonding and the golden hour - Waiting to clamp allows more uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact, promoting oxytocin release and early bonding.

Whilst DCC has many benefits, certain situations may arise where it would not be done, & instead, immediate clamping is preferred;
🩸 Baby needs urgent resuscitation away from the mother.
🩸Maternal bleeding requiring immediate intervention.
🩸Placental complications, ex. abruption or cord avulsion.
🩸Preterm babies may still benefit, but approach depends on clinical stability.

🪷 Milking of the Umbilical Cord
Cord milking involves gently squeezing blood through the cord from the placenta toward the baby several times before clamping.
It can be used when full delayed clamping isn’t possible, ex. in emergency situations, so to help deliver some of the extra blood volume quickly.

Pregnancy can make sleep tricky, from hormones to baby kicks to endless bathroom trips. 😅
But good rest supports your heart, mood, and your baby’s growth.

🌙 Try side-sleeping (preferably left side)
🩵 Use pillows for support
🌿 Keep a calm bedtime routine

Your midwife can help you find safe, comfortable positions and habits to sleep better because rest is prenatal care. 💛

Midwives and student midwives participated in the 4-day Health Careers Fair 2025 at Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary School, to promote midwifery as a dynamic and essential healthcare profession; emphasizing its contribution to maternal and neonatal well-being 🌷

We welcomed many curious and motivated students who were eager to learn about the academic pathway, clinical experiences, and profound impact of a career in midwifery 🩷

Thank you to the organisers for hosting a great fair. ✨

Colostrum - Nature’s Liquid Gold 🌟
Colostrum, a thick, yellowish liquid that is produced by the alveolar cells of the breasts before mature milk comes in, is often called ‘liquid gold’ - not just for its golden colour, but for its incredible richness. It offers a multitude of benefits, namely:
✔️ Protects against infection - it coats the baby’s intestinal lining and blocks pathogens, while helping beneficial bacteria colonize, thus forming a healthy microbiome.
✔️ Boosts immunity - rich in IgA, lactoferrin, leukocytes, colostrum teaches the baby’s immune system how to recognize and fight pathogens that enter the body.
✔️ Aids digestion - colostrum acts as a natural laxative, helping the baby to pass meconium and clear bilirubin, thetefore lowering the risk of newborn jaundice.
An increasingly common practice that is being promoted amongst women in their late third trimester is colostrum harvesting, where hand expression is used to collect small amounts of colostrum prior to birth, usually done between weeks 36 and 37 of pregnancy, under the guidance of a midwife 💛 The expressed drops are stored in sterile syringes or containers, frozen, and then used after the baby is born. It is even more encouraged to be done in cases of gestational diabetes, C-section births, or NPICU stays, where the baby might need some extra support after birth 🌼

From inspiring keynote speakers to workshops, the 8th European Midwives Association Education Conference reminded us why we chose this path ❤
The European Midwives Association - EMA

Our very own midwifery students engaged with midwives and healthcare professionals from across Europe for 2 inspiring days ✨
An OSQ stand was also set up which displayed our OSQ hoodies and various midwifery tools which we use throughout our studies 🩷

A huge thank you to the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses, Ms.Claire Zerafa and Ms.Giselle Curmi for this opportunity 💕

We are so grateful to have represented midwifery students from Midwifery at UM among such passionate professionals 💜
