Sunday Art day: Wathu Art

I am Nursing Officer working at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Pediatric Special Care Ward. Born on 24 July, 1998 in Blantyre where I grew up. I have always been a lover of art ever since I knew how to hold a pencil. As I child, I would fill up every blank page with drawings. Throughout primary my friends knew me as the art kid. I’d spend the free time at school and home drawing. Drawings would always come through easy for me. As I went to secondary school, I sort of tried to hide it but it would still show through my little doodles at the corners of my notebooks.

One time my biology teacher needed someone to do the drawings for our class and everyone pointed me out. That was a huge “art” milestone in my life. That was the first time my art was put on display for people to see.

Fast forward to college (Kamuzu College of Nursing), I sort of stopped drawing because I did not want to be seen as childish but I still wanted to, so I went online and found some drawing apps, Sony Sketch and Autodesk Sketchbook. Googled some tutorials on how to use them and then began to draw again on my phone because I did not want people to see. But a couple of my close friends told me it was good and so I posted the drawings every once in a while and got some positive feedback.

In 2019, after college was when I tried doing some semi-realistic artwork and started getting a lot of requests from people to turn their pictures to art. That was how Wathu Art came to life. I have learnt from watching other artists on Instagram and YouTube. I was inspired by Bennie Buatsie a Ghanaian female digital artist. I loved how she proudly represented Africa through her drawings of black women. It brings me joy to be able to share with people what I love to do every single time I finish a commission.

I use the drawing apps Autodesk Sketchbook and IbisPaintX. Most of my work is digital, but now I also get the artwork printed and framed in various sizes. I currently work through my phone so people send me their requests through WhatsApp and Instagram.

Nature Saturday: Kasungu National Park

Kasungu National Park is Malawi’s second largest and least-visited protected areas, located in the central region near the Zambian border, 184 km from Lilongwe. Covering roughly 2,100 square kilometre and lying at approximately 1,000m above sea level on averages. it is characterised by miombo woodland, open grasslands, a lake, seasonal rivers and wide dambos, giving it a very remote and undeveloped feel.

The park has a long conservation history, having been established in 1930. Wildlife populations declined for many years, but recent conservation efforts have focused on recovery. Elephants are now one of the park’s key species following reintroductions, alongside hippos and crocodiles in the river systems. Several antelope species are present, including eland, roan, sable and hartebeest. Zebras and bufalo roam the park and Leopards occur but are rarely seen. The park is especially strong for birdlife, with 400 recorded species, making it notable for birding and raptor sightings.

Kasungu is particularly appealing to visitors who prefer quiet, uncrowded parks and a sense of wilderness rather than guaranteed big game sightings. It suits travellers interested in landscapes, birdlife and a more exploratory safari experience. Access and game viewing are generally easier during the dry season from May to October, while the wet season brings lush scenery and dramatic light but more difficult road conditions. The park also has many important Iron Age archaeological sites.

Accommodation within the park is limited, with Lifupa Conservation Lodge being the main option, alongside basic campsites. The overall experience is simple and authentic, rewarding patience and curiosity rather than speed or luxury.

Sunday Art day: Patrick Ng’ambe

I was born in Lilongwe City where my parents were living at that time. I did my primary education in Lilongwe and Dedza Districts, and my Secondary in Dedza.

I am a last born in a family of seven, I’ve been raised with my mother, because my father passed away when I was 10 years old. Life was tough on me since my mother relied on farming so that she could have daily needs, I believe that this situation led me to think on how I can support myself to ease my mother’s burden.

I am a self taught artist, and I have been painting for more than 15 years now. I use acrylic paint.

I sell my artworks at Dedza Art Gallery, in Dedza.

Nature Saturday: Lilongwe Wildlife Centre

Lilongwe Wildlife Centre is the green heart of Lilongwe.
Spanning 70 hectares of beautiful forest, Lilongwe Wildlife Centre is a unique nature reserve in the heart of the capital. The site is run by one of Malawi’s leading conservation organisations, Lilongwe Wildlife Trust.

Lilongwe Wildlife Centre is the perfect place to escape the city. Attractions include an elevated boardwalk and beautiful trails through the forest and along the Lingadzi River - ideal for walking and running. The forest itself is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including vervet monkeys, duikers, bushpigs, jackals, crocodiles, genets and over 200 bird species. As you take a walk, see if you can spot the wildlife sculptures that are dotted around the site, made from recycled materials by Malawian artists. After exploring the forest you can relax at the cafe or browse the gift shop for arts and crafts.

Lilongwe Wildlife Centre is also home to Malawi’s only wildlife sanctuary, where injured and orphaned wild animals are cared for before being returned to the wild. However, the wildlife sanctuary is not open to the public. This is because it is a rehabilitation facility which seeks to release as many animals back into the wild as possible. Reducing interactions between animals and people is critical to giving animals the best possible chance of being released. However, entrance fees to Lilongwe Wildlife Centre help to fund its wildlife rescue work – so by visiting you are helping to save animals!

Lilongwe Wildlife Trust’s wider work includes wildlife rescue and welfare, biodiversity monitoring, conservation justice, environmental education and campaigning. To make a donation to support their work, or to undertake a volunteering placement with Lilongwe Wildlife Trust, please visit www.lilongwewildlife.org.
