We would like to inform that from 4th - 5th April, we held the Kendo Training & Cultural Exchange Seminar successfully conducted both in Lilongwe and Blantyre, led by visiting instructor Yohei NAGATA Sensei from Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC). The initiative was organized under the invitation of Mr. Austinie SOMBA, President of the Kendo Association of Malawi.
Distinguished Guests
• His Excellency Mr. Yasushi NAITO, Japanese Ambassador to Malawi, honored the seminar with his presence.
• Mr. Shadreck KULEMEKA, Managing Director of CFAO Mobility Malawi Limited, represented the institution, demonstrating strong corporate support.
• Yohei NAGATA Sensei (TMC) delivered valuable lectures and engaged in cultural exchange activities, including sightseeing and a tour of CFAO Mobility Malawi Limited.
Training Highlights
Lectures and practice sessions were held at:
• Kamuzu Institute of Sports Dojo (Lilongwe) – 4th April, 2026
• Blantyre Sports Arena Dojo (Blantyre) – 5th April, 2026
Key corrections addressed during training:
Etiquette & Presence – Proper bowing Key corrections addressed during training:
1. Etiquette & Presence – Proper bowing, sonkyo, and zanshin.
2. Footwork (Ashi-sabaki) – Smooth sliding steps, balance, and distance control.
3. Striking Technique – Correct cutting path, strong kiai, full follow-through.
4. Kirikaeshi & Kihon Ex*****on – Rhythm, accuracy, posture, and grip.
Certification:
A Kyu grading was conducted in Blantyre, with two participants achieving 2 Kyu certification:
• Dr. Friday KALONGA (Malawi)
• Mr. Jerome George MHAGAMA (Tanzania)
