Day 7 | Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week

Today we also feature Annamarie Namba, a Pharmacy Assistant from Mwaiwathu Private Hospital, who sheds light on the everyday challenges that unintentionally contribute to antimicrobial resistance in hospital settings.

From pressure to prescribe antibiotics quickly, to anxious families expecting instant relief, limited laboratory resources, delayed test results, and overcrowded wards. These real world challenges often lead to unnecessary or broad-spectrum antibiotic use.

Annemarie also reminds us that there are practical, and effective solutions.

Change begins with awareness, teamwork, and consistent action.

Act now, protect today, secure tomorrow.

Day 7 | Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week

Today’s spotlight features Pharmacy Specialist Christina Mwinjiwa, who shares key initiatives that Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) is implementing in the fight against AMR.

As a hub site for the CwPAMS project, QECH plays a central role in strengthening antimicrobial stewardship, enhancing infection prevention practices, supporting data-driven decision making, and mentoring healthcare teams in Chikwawa and Chiladzulu District Hospitals , where PHASOM is implementing targeted AMS interventions.

Through improved diagnostics, responsible antibiotic use, and continuous healthcare worker training, QECH continues to demonstrate how collaborative efforts can make a real impact in slowing the spread of AMR.

Together, we can safeguard the medicines that safeguard us.

Day 6| Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week

Today, we hear from Kondwani Mjathu wholesale pharmacist on the critical role they play in the fight against AMR.

Wholesale pharmacists are the gatekeepers of the medicine supply chain. They ensure that substandard and falsified medicines never reach patients, because these unsafe products not only fail to treat infections they also accelerate antimicrobial resistance.

He also reminds the public:
Always buy medicines from licensed pharmacies and drug stores.
Choosing legal, quality-assured sources protects your health and helps safeguard the effectiveness of antibiotics for everyone.

Every step in the supply chain matters. From wholesaler to community pharmacy to patient, responsible practices save lives.

Did You Know ?

1. The development of a new antibiotic can take 10-15 years and cost more than USD 1 billion.

2. Releases from unused drugs disposed of in toilets, bins or waste dumps contribute to exacerbating AMR.

3. Keeping animals healthy is an important measure to reduce the need for antimicrobial treatment in the first place.

4. In a high-impact scenario, AMR will reduce global annual GDP by 3.8 percent by 2050. Left unchecked, in the next decade, AMR could result in a GDP shortfall of US$ 3.4 trillion annually and push 24 million more people into extreme poverty.

Day 4 | Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week

Today, we spotlight a voice from the frontline Prisca Nayupe a community pharmacist sharing the real challenges she faces in the fight against AMR.

In community pharmacy, every day is a balancing act.
The pressure to maintain business profits.
The responsibility to uphold professionalism.
And the constant need to explain, educate, and be understood by clients who simply want to feel better quickly.

Saying “No, you don’t need antibiotics” isn’t always easy.
But it is necessary.
Because every inappropriate antibiotic sold may create resistance that affects an entire community.

Community pharmacists stand at a difficult intersection:
Patient expectations, economic realities, and the ethical duty to protect public health.
Yet they continue to advocate, counsel, and push for safer practices in even when it costs them.

These are the unseen battles in antimicrobial stewardship.

To every pharmacist choosing responsibility over convenience your voice matters, your decisions matter, and your courage protects us all.

Act now protect today, secure tomorrow.

Every 3 minutes, someone loses their life to an antimicrobial-resistant infection. This is not just a statistic it’s a call to action.

We all have a role to play in protecting the effectiveness of the medicines we depend on.
From proper prescription practices to responsible use, the time to act is now.

Let’s raise our voices, spread awareness, and champion safer, smarter use of antimicrobials.

Day 3 | Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week

One of the silent drivers of AMR is something many people do not realise is harmful: using antibiotics to treat viral infections.

Colds. Flu. Viral sore throats.
These are conditions where antibiotics offer no relief, no cure, and no protection.
But every time antibiotics are taken unnecessarily, bacteria are given the chance to adapt, and eventually, to resist.

Today, Mirriam Ngalande Banda a pharmacology lecturer breaks down this misconception and reminds us that beyond the science, the impact is deeply human.

When antibiotics fail, the consequences go far beyond medicine.

Responsible use is not about restricting access. It is about protecting the medicines that protect us.

Let us choose wisely.
Let us educate widely.
Let us treat antibiotics as the powerful and irreplaceable tools they are.

AMR begins with awareness, but it must end with action.
Act now, protect today, secure tomorrow.
