“To deliver the best mental health programmes in emergencies you need to treat mental health and psychosocial support as a human right, not as a luxury because people during emergencies are people: they need more than food to survive.”

Globally, 75% of all mental health challenges begin before age 24, and almost 46,000 adolescents die from su***de every year, putting it among the top five causes of death for their age group. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), up to 90% of young people's mental health needs are unmet due to a lack of resources.

Today, 4th of February, Brain Rest Initiative joins the international community to commemorate World Cancer Day.

The cancer burden is an increasing problem in Africa, with more than 1 million estimated new cancer cases in 2020. Global research estimates that by 2030 there will be a 70% increase in the number of cancer cases in Africa and this is due to population growth, aging, and lifestyle issues.

This year’s campaign theme, “Close the Care Gap”, is about equity in access to cancer care. The gap in cancer care is unreasonably wide and it’s costing lives in Malawi and Across Africa.

Our call to Malawi Ministry of Health and all stakeholders in healthcare and across the cancer control continuum is to reimagine the systems and normalize ease of access to cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

Our role at Brain rest is providing psychosocial support which we are committed to.

November 1st, 2021.

A new month is yet upon us. We welcome the new month inspired by global recognition for mental health displayed by different actors in the just ended month, 10th of October, a day set aside in recognition of World Mental Health Day.

One Chilora, a Malawi News contributor, opines that "On account of persistent social and economic challenges in the country, it is safe to conclude that malawi will continue to struggle with su***des and various mental conditions that trigger suicidal thoughts.

This means that malawi's campaign on mental health should not be confined to one day in october. The problem is far larger than a single day. Everyday should be mental health day in malawi."

Brain Rest Project pledges great commitment to promote mental health in Malawi.
